:o Multiple birthing question: Does the 2nd and 3rd etc hurt as much as the first one?

I'm curious to know this too.

I imagine the vast majority of multiples these days are delivered by c/s though - but that's just my anti-hospital bias talking. ;)

my mum had twins but i never bothered to ask her this question.

back then with no scans available she had no idea and said she was expecting the after birth and got twin 2 instead LOL

to the doctor exclaiming "what the bloody hell you doing woman"

My great-grandmother had twins (like, 80ish years ago), and after the second one came out, her doctor [who was also another member of the family] looked up her vagina and went 'oooh, here comes the next one'. she never forgave him for that :laughing:

as for the OP - very interested in that as well  i know there's at least one natural-birthing twin mum on here:detective:

my assumption would be, that it doesn't hurt quite as much - but that it varies from woman to woman

My stomach hurt just as much as it would have with 1.

Ribs & chest were bruised from them going fishing for DS though.

What an interesting question!! I imagine the 2nd (and possibly 3rd) babies do still hurt.. but I have no idea how the pain would compare to the first one.. :detective:

(Unsurprisingly my triplets will definitely be born by c-section!)

I havent had twins but I assume it would still hurt.

I had an epi so I didnt feel much but my friends said after she had her daughter her contractions were still very painful untill she had birthed the placenta.

My Mum is a twin and my Nan said the second was more painful for her. Like PP said this was a long time ago and Nan didnt know she was having twins so her pain more came from them pushing her belly thinking she had a tumour:confused: and then the Dr reaching up and pulling twin 2 out. OUCH!

*Disclaimer: I have never given birth to twins or more.

Given that it hurts to birth the placenta after you've birthed a baby, then I think it's safe to assume it's going to hurt to birth another baby too (especially given that a baby's head is harder than a placenta). Also, whilst the first baby's head will have stretched the perineum, the 2nd baby's head is still going to have to do some stretching as the vaginal/perineal tissues are ELASTIC in nature - ie they will stretch back fairly quickly. Also, 2nd babies are rarely positioned in the exact same position as the first, so they can put pressure on different parts of the woman's anatomy than the first.

Hunterzmummy: That would depend on what sort of twins they are. Monoamniotic twins share the same amniotic sac, so the waters would only break once. Additionally, some monoamniotic twins are ALSO monochorionic, meaning they share the same sac AND the same placenta, so there would only be 1 placenta to birth too.

Diamniotic twins (who have their own separate amniotic sacs, so waters would break twice) can also be monochorionic, too.

There are a whole lot of variables that factor into it all :)

do you know if your twins are sharing a placenta? or have one each?

i believe if they each have their own, then your waters may break more than once (but in saying that, i know people who's hind water has broken, while their 'actual waters' haven't - so its possible to have your waters break twice in a non-twin birth as well), but if they're sharing the placenta/membrane sac then chances are it'll only break once
tam said it smarter than me!!! :-)

Hmmmm....that's something I'd have to ask Mum. We were both breech too.....just to add to it all :p

It's not as simple as that :) There are all sorts of variations.

Depends how many sacks you have & if they come out intact or not.

For example: My 3 are Dichorionic, monochorionic, diamoniotic. 2 sacks & placenta's, girls shared but had a membrane between them. James had all how own.

I would ask my mum, but I think it is a very sensitive subject to her so I won't. (she lost both twins within days of birth).
I would imagine it would hurt as much as the first, it still hurts to birth the placenta so going by that theory I would say any multiple babies born consecutively would hurt.

Neither of my placentas hurt to birth?

Neither of my placentas hurt to birth?

Neither did mine, I didn't even get a lot of pain, with the contraction to birth the placentas.

The labour and births for me, a whole different story.... though.

Some women don't experience pain with childbirth either :) It's an individual thing. I should have clarified and said: For some women it will and for some women it won't, depending on a whole range of factors.

ETA: I should also add, it's probably a moot point (mostly!) anyway, as it's very VERY rare to have a multiple birth that isn't induced/medicated/in lithomy position/a c-section etc these days - all of which will of course hugely impact the pain the mother might have felt if it had been a natural, drug-free birth.

Mine did but that was probably because the stupid midwife was pulling on the cord to get the placenta out (even after I had the injection to help get it out).

Charlis_mum will be one of the best people to ask

I gave in to the stupid epi so felt my DD being born (she slipped out really!) and then 17minutes later could only pull "pushy faces" to get DS2 out!! I couldn't feel a thing.

They both had their own placentas, but they fused into one great big one!!

Not sure on what position she had her ID twins in, but a friend of mine had hers naturally, drug free I believe, in a hospital!!
Definitely wasn't induced either, amazing, amazing stuff!

Yeah, Charli'sMum right here on BH had her twin (fraternal, I believe) naturally, not induced, no drugs, in a hospital too :)

I didn't say it was IMPOSSIBLE - just exceedingly RARE these days :)

:smiliedance: Pick me, Pick me! :D

Damn straight the second twin hurts!!

DD2 was positioned beautifully and has a lovely shaped head, she took 2 involuntary pushes 7mins after we arrived at the hospy. DS2 had been breech and flipped into position after she was born. He has a horrid shaped head - although the same circumference as hers, it hurt alot more. Same as his older brother 2years earlier - my little boys have long heads (from the front of the forehead to the back of their heads) and it seems to hurt much more than my little girls delicate heads. :o

ETA: They are fraternal twins - 2 sacs, 2 placentas that looked like one as it had fused around the 14-18week mark. So my waters broke at home for DD2, and then again after she had been born when I started pushing (i think) for DS2.

And although very rare - drug free, intervention free in 1hr 45mins under OB care in a private hospy! (it took him too long to get there though and the brilliant middy's delivered both bubs, he arrived 10mins larer!) I also had a fabulous Doula - Go Roopee!

My twin birth was natural but i had to have the drip to bring on the contractions (after the first medication to stop the contractions didn't work!) i was amlost in last stages of labour. I also had to have an eppi i was told in no uncertain terms that it was happening or i would be having a c section.

I can tell you now yes i didn't feel much with ds but with dd OMG the epi had worn off (or a lot of it anyway). I was it so much pain (i also have a low pain threshold(sp?) lol big sook). I had ds waters broke at home and dd they had to brake to get the contractions moving again as they slowed as the medication to stop labour had finally kicked in.

but yes it did hurt for the second one and they were very very small.

I had to have a c section with mine, but I would imagine for some women that having the first twin out may be a distraction too and make the second less painful?

  Not for me....my first thought when contractions started again....oh yeah, interesting point - contractions stopped as soon as DD2 was born, so I had 10mins or so to coo over her cuddle her etc. THEN the contractions started again, I had no thoughts for DD, my only thoughts were oooooohhhhhhhhh ****, that's right, I have to do that AGAIN! PMSL!!! I actually didn't even giver her a thought while the second, second stage was happening. My only thoughs were pushing that bubba out. AFTER that came the amazing high of OMFG I just pushed out TWO babies, we have TWO babies, OMG I am b/f TWO babies . TWO babies is still something DH and I say to each other and laugh or smile with these stoopid goofy grins. :cloud9: & :hair:
