My son is 6 weeks old, and he keeps getting hiccups after a feed, not every feed but a lot of them. They keep him awake afterwards and he falls asleep when they disappear. But when he has them he looks really uncomfortable :(

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to prevent them, or get rid of them?!

Give him a drink of water after his feed or when he has them, thats what I did/do with DD to get rid of them. I think the only way to prevent him getting them all the time is to make sure he isnt drinking to fast. As thats probably the cause of it. hope this helps!

Thanks Kaileysmum! He is definately a gutsa! But how can I make sure he isnt drinking too fast? I give him EBM in bottle, and sometimes bf. Also, can I give him water even though he is only 6 weeks old?

My son used to get the hiccups all the time. I used to give him a little drink of wated when he had the hiccupps too. Make sure it is boiled and cooled water though :D

Yeah you can give him, cooled boiled water at 6 weeks, you'll find he'll only take about 10mls. Are your giving him the EBM in a bottle? The teat maybe to fast for him, so he's drinking to fast. I dont think you make him drink slower on the breat though.

I know how annoying the hiccups can be, as its frustrating for the little bub. DD had them all the time when she was younger, she still gets them a bit, but I just give her some water and they go away.

Great, thanks guys I will definately try some boiled cooled water next time he has them  Yeah I give him EBM in a bottle through the night (DH does) or when my nipples are a bit sore. I use the newborn avent bottle & teat? When he was in hospital they were using a faster flowing one  Maybe he is just drinking way too fast?!

How is he when he has a burp? does it come straight up and is it a good burp or a small one. Maybe he isnt getting enough wind up after. My son grew out of it at about 3 months, but both my kids had it. I used Avent bottles with the first baby and target baby bottles with the second one. I didnt have any troubles with the Avent bottles either

Hmm :detective: yeah sometimes he burps better than other times, I will have to pay attention to how he burps when he actually gets the hiccups... good idea! He hates having to stop to burp, he starts growling  lil piggy

Yes its should be fine to give your ds water too. You just have to be carefull with giving it in a bottle if your BFing and havent introduced the bottle, as at 3 weeks it might give him nipple confusion (they say not to introduce the bottle until 6 weeks as it may cause nipple confusion, but a lot of mothers give babys bottles of EBM at this age and they dont get nipple confusion). If you are worryed about giving it in a bottle, just give him the water in a eye dropper style thing if you didnt want to use a bottle.
