I was 63 kilos when I became pregnant with DS but put on 35 kilos during pregnancy. Since giving birth I've only lost 10 kilos so I am still weighing around 88 kilos. I know that I'm overweight and that can affect concieving, what I'm wondering is what weight do they consider ideal for you to get down too to TTC.

If you've had someone suugest you lose weight what weight do they tend to want you to get to, is it a % of your weight or an actual weight?

Well - my doctor told me that a bmi over 30% is obese - bmi 25-30 is overweight. BUT - you need to consider other factors - body type (are you very muscular) and height and age. Ive been told it is unhealthy for me, (due to risks involved - large birth weight, GD, odema etc) that it isnt wise to become pregnant unless you are at a decent body weight thats healthy - so i really need to loose a massive amount of weight! It has been suggested even a small 5 to 10 kilo loss is enough to restart ovulation and sustain a healthy pregnancy.

There is no reason you shouldnt start now to lose some weight - because while pregnant you will be aware of any gain risk - the gp/midwife can help you monitor it and with good healthy eating there really isnt a reason to put on too much weight. How your clothes fit is always been the best indicator of weight gain for me too - i am very muscular so is a little hard to test fat content!

If you are really worried, visit the doc again and get the nitty gritty on your weight - they will say what your bmi is and let you know your options.
Hope ive helped.:)

I'm in exactly the same situation as you too, I actually even weigh the same. Id like to lose the weigh before I get pregnant again, but we want to TTC in October so I dont have very long. Its also a hard one as I think Why lose the weight when Ill just have to lose it again after we have #2. I think they say its good to lose 10% of your weight if you are overweight before TTCing. If you want to chat please PM me, as we are both in the same boat. Ill be watching this thread for info.

I guess the good thing about losing it (or some) before you get pg again would be there is less to lose next time - the task won't seem so big when you get around to it. Better to try and lose 20kgs now than 40kgs afterwards??

Hi toms mum, I'm in the sasme boat & Just thought I would let you know that both my Dr and my naturopath said that it is not about how much you weigh as plenty of people who are overweight get pregnant. they said that if you lose some weight about 10% that it actually changes chemicals in your body and gives you a better chance of conceiving. Not exactly sure of the ins & outs of it. But I must say my SIL was ttc for a year then she gave up and decided to los weight instead, she lost 6kg and fell pg almost straight away. Her dd is 1 now. I have heard this of other people as well. :fingerscrossed: for you.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm trying to lose to help with TTC but it is so hard to stay motivated knowing that it will most likely go back on again. I've gone from 93 to 88 since May so I think I'm doing OK diet wise but I'm not concieving and am just started to get that looked into as I'm 35 and a little impatient  I'm just worried that they'll focus mainly on my weight and not other possibilities.

Before I fell PG with DD, I lost 17 kgs (got down to 78 kgs). I then put on 30 kgs while I was PG (natural for me, not because I was gorging myself on Maccas or anything! ;) In fact, I had a rather large baby & was retaining several kilos of fluid, much of which contributed to my weight gain).

Before falling PG for the second time, I had put on a bit of the weight I lost since I had DD & fell PG at around 86 kgs - more than I would have liked, but I'm happy!

We had a great deal of trouble conceiving DD, but a heavier me conceived #2 no worries!!

The ideal weight to conceive is a healthy weight for you. As others have said, the BMI is a reasonably good indication, although I am quite heavy for my size (people stare at me agog when I claim to be 86 kgs, they simply don't believe me!) so I don't tend to find the BMI an accurate indicator of my health - weight ratio.
