I was taken to hospital at 36 weeks and stayed there most of the day, only to be sent home and told I was in Spurious (spelling?) Labour. My Ob called to have me come in the following week.
So at 37 weeks, still in spurious labour (which is damn annoying and sometimes painful) my Ob told us that on the scan I had done the previous week our son was weighing 3.2kg approx. As I was still in a fair bit of pain she advised that bub and I compromise and I was booked in to be induced at 38weeks. (that week amazingly went quite fast)
Monday July 10th midnight hubby and I rocked up at Pindara all prepared for our natural birth, well natural apart from the induction lol. We were settled in the birthing suite and a trace was put on me for 1/2 hr to check on bub who was doing really well.
Had a internal (Ouch!) and then the gel was applied and we were told to get a good nights sleep and not to really expect much to happen till morning.
Woke up feeling fine, had a shower and breakfast then another trace was put on to check on everything.
Ob arrived at 8.30am and did a internal, Not dilated in the least...grrr so more gel was put on and I was told to walk around.
Hour or so later started to get really intense contractions and hubby and I thought at last something is happening and we continued to patrol the hospital although I was slowing down considerably.
11.30am had another internal and started to cry when we were told that I still had not dilated at all. I could not beleive the pain I was experiencing with no payoff, we were also told that bub had still not engaged and he was laying on his side along my spine which explained the horrible lower back pain.
We had lunch then the midwives helped me into the spa, I was in it for 2hrs or so still in mass pain but it was easier to handle floating in water.
The midwife sat with me and my hubby while I was in the spa and we talked options. The amount of pain I was in and my tolerance to it was not boding well, the midwife did not think I could make it without a epidural (Which I definately did not want).
She rang the Ob and relayed my progress since the Ob's visit.
The options were -
Continue till morning the next day and see what happens, hopefully I have dilated or my membranes are showing so my waters can be broken manually.
Have a C-section.
1.30pm:
We all discussed it and agreed that I couold not possibly handle the pain even with drugs so we opted for the C-section but as I did not want a epidural I insisted that I had to go under a general. Another quick call to the Ob and it was all arranged for 4.00pm that afternoon.
I hopped out of the spa and walked round the birthing suite as best as I could, stressing about the recovery time etc. I had heard horrible things about C-sections.
3.00pm:
The contractions I was having were sooo intense I was doubling over as I dressed in the theatre gown I had just been handed. Getting up on the bed was a nuisance and I thanked god that I had my wonderful hubby and a great midwife there to help me.
3:30pm
Another trace was put on to check bubs was ok and he was :) The midwife the informed me that I was having contractions one minute apart. lol no wonder I was in pain, but still not dilation or waters breaking and bub still was not engaged, so my last minute thoughts of a natural birth went out the window.
I was given some nasty medicine and shaved. Then I was wheeled up to the theatre room with midwife and hubby trailing behind.
As I was having a general hubby was told to wait in a room outside and I was wheeled in. Said hi to my Ob and the anasthesist came and introduced himself and then started talking about epidurals:eek: I calmly informed him that I was wanting a general thankyou very much. No way did I wish to be awake as someone sliced into me:thumbsdown:
Hubby was called in to talk sense into me I suppose rofl. He arrived in a blue pj getup looking surprised as he knew I wanted a general. The anasthesist explained that as I had eaten lunch 3-4hrs ago the risks to myself and bub increased significantly. After about 10minutes of him listing horrible things and my Ob agreeing that a epidural was the best way to go I was close to tears as was hubby and I agreed to a epidural.
5mins later I had a needle in my back giving me a local so I would not feel the epidural needle going in, I dread to think of it even now :(
Once it was applied the anasthesist traced ice over my belly and tickled my feet to ensure that I could feel nothing. It is weird but I was thankful. Our camera was handed to the Paediatrician with strict instructions to not photograph anything too gory (which he ignored lol)
My hubby sat beside me holding my hand and chatting to me as everything was done. I could feel a slight sawing and tugging sensation but nothing that was too bad and no pain at all. Then all of a sudden we were told our son was born and he was being held up over the curtain. He was perfect and I will never forget how happy I was the first time I saw him and touched his chubby cheek.
He was born at 4.26pm July 11th 2006
Weight - 3.805kg (8.6punds)
Length - 49cm
HC - 39cm
Later I found out that even if I had chosen to continue with the natural birth it would have ended in a emergency C-section as there was no possible way he would have fit through my pelvis. Which is one reason why he had not engaged.
My recovery has been faster and easier than I had expected and if we have a second child I will be having a C-section again.
