Have you ever taken one? Do you think they are helpful? What would you think was a good workshop to take particularly in the Brisbane area?

I think it depends where abouts in your photography journey you are, and what you want to learn. For a lot of people, the best place to start is actually how to use their dSLR properly, instead of just using it as a point and shoot. For things like that, check out your local tafe and there'll be plenty of beginner courses right up to more advanced workshops.

For workshops away from tafe, it really depends what you want to learn, because if you're going to a workshop run by a particular person, you're going to be learning that persons particular style, and their method of work. You'll need to make sure it suits you and what you want to do. If it doesn't, find something else :)

Do you have an Adult Education program?
In Tassie we have one and they run all sorts of workshops for all different things. They have photography ones like how to use your digital camera, how to use or DSLR, Then have advanced ones who go out in groups to different areas and stuff they also have photoshop ones... They are quite reasonable prices too - maybe they have something like that in your area?

Is there a flickr groups for brisbane? Maybe ask there. Or even suggest a whole bunch of you get together for a shoot.

Or try a strobists group in flickr for people in your area.

I've been to a couple of ocf/strobe workshops - they are awesome and a lot of fun.
Though what you get out of it would vary depending in who was running it and yourself of course.
