View Full Version : Doesnt like being swaddled
Howdy ladies
My DS is now 7 weeks old.
He hates having his hands wrapped tightly in a swaddle.. which is fine at night, he doesnt wake himself up, but, during the day he barely sleeps because he startles himself awake.
Any advice??
I just want to make sure he's getting enough rest thats all..and its only around 5pm that he crashes for a few hours..
Thanks
My ds hated being wrapped aswell. From 6 weeks old I put him in a Grobag sleeping bag and he slept like a baby .
I used the sleeping bags right up until he was about 20 months.

DD hated being swaddled until I used the swaddle me wrap, but I started at about 4weeks.
I guess one thing to try (but I would guess you probably have already) would be to try and keep his arms from startling him by tucking his sheets in nice and tight with his hands up beside his ears. That way hopefully he has enough movement to keep happy but have his elbows tucked in enough to stop his arms moving.

both of mine screamed when swaddled right from when the midwife wrapped them in the hospital hours after their birth. we unwrapped them and they stopped crying so i never wrapped them at home. dd became a tummy sleeper with her bum in the air - still does at 4 most nights. ds used to roll all over the place but he was an excellent sleeper - slept through all of dd's noise during the day.
If he is sleeping well at night have you tried something like a swing or similar for daytime sleeps?
DD also hated being swaddled and we gave up on it after only 2 weeks. She would sleep fine at night with her arms up over her head (just like her Dad! :p) , but didn't really sleep well during the day.
We bought a swing and found that she wouldn't wake herself because as soon as she started to stir the motion and music of the swing would have her asleep again straight away.
I have no idea why she would sleep ok at night (just lucky that she got night and day the right way around early on maybe? :detective:) but we definately found the swing a real lifesaver during the day.
The sides of the swing kind of kept DD's arms at her side as well so she wouldn't jerk them around and wake that way.
My son never liked to be wrapped all that much either. We just bought a sleeping bag from Best and Less which was good. It gave me the relief to know that he was warm enough. I am not all that familar with the Grobags so not sure if they are the ones where their arms are just inside it or not. My son also liked to sleep on his play mat which had a tiny pillow and he would pop his arms under that.

Hi there,
try googling "angel wrap". It's a style of swaddling where they can move their arms a bit more.
Good luck!

I was going to do a thread on the exact same thing. DD2 is almost 7 weeks and does the exact same thing except she doesnt mind being swaddled, she just breaks loose in a split second and same, she is okay at night just during the day.
I have tried muslin wraps, even bought a piece of material and cut it extra wide, thicker cotton wraps, even the grobag wrap with the velcro, and as soon as she wriggles she breaks free. She isnt a little girl, born 9lb12/56cm and now already 12lb1/61cm and quite strong been holding herself upright for weeks and like to roll from side to side and kick out. So I dont know what to do also?

To be honest, if it were me I'd just leave it be.
The startle thing doesn't last forever and my babies soon figured out that waking themselves up wasn't a big deal and they were able to go back to sleep again afterwards without me needing to step in and bind their arms.
It only became a problem for DS when he was growing too big for his bassinet as his startle would result in his arms hitting the sides of it, so we took that as a cue to move him into the cot and he was fine after that.

DS is the same- he wriggles out of every wrap and then wouldnt sleep cos his arms woke him up:doh:
we bought an ergococoon. best investment ever- we now have 2. they zip up and he cant get out, but he can move his hands- suck on them etc through the swaddle. it also means he can roll if he needs to and not get stuck cos he has arm movement- just not enough to flail and wake himself up :)
