View Full Version : Quick question about sterilising!
Hi there,
Cleaning and sterilising my pump is a PAIN IN THE **S but I want to pump morning and afternoon to build up stockpile! So my question is - if I clean and sterilise the pump in the morning and use it once, can I just keep it in the fridge until I use it again in the afternoon or do I need to clean and sterilise it again?
It would have bits of milk residue in it from the morning's pump so it would technically be mixing cool directly with warm milk.... But then again they say you can leave milk room temperature for 6 hours don't they? Maybe I should just leave it out of the fridge?!... HELP!!

I would just give it a jolly good rinse in hot water before putting it in the fridge.
I'm not thayt into sterilising though.... I tend to go with the "hot soapy wash and a good rinse" method, and then air dry before putting in a ziplock bag in teh fridge until next time.

I have always pumped each feed during the day, and between feeds just stored it in the fridge, I just attach a new bottle each time to keep the bottom of the pump sealed (cause I generaly fill the little collection bottles fast). It was actually an lc who told me to do this so its was I have always done.
I think the ABA have a milk collection and storage brochure online if you have a look.
i only sterilise my pumps twice a day. the rest of the day I rinse them in hot water then fill a container with hot water and sit them in that until i use it again or i dry them with paper towel and put in the fridge. i exclusively express and have always done this with my pump parts. for twice a day id rinse in steaming hot water and store in the fridge.
Breast milk contains white cells that munch up bacteria so there is no need to sterilise..just clean.
Get a bottle brush that is exclusively for use with the pump and bub's bottles.
Between expressings pull the pump apart and run the bits under cool water (this rinses off the milk properly as hot water sets it) then wash witha drop of detergent and the briush under warm water, then rinse well under hot water and allow to air dry. This is all you need to do with your bottles and teats as well as long as they are only used for breast milk.
I used to express throughout the day. I had a bottle in the fridge that I topped up as I only ever got tiny amounts, so it took about 2 days of expressing to get a decent amount to freeze.. I would then rinse out the pump and bottle I used and clean as above and leave it in the drainer ready for the next time. At the end of each day I made sure I used hot soapy water in the sink and pulled it thoughly apart etc to give it a really good scrub, before rinsing and leaving to drip dry.
