My wife and I are in the process of emigrating to Brisbane, and I would like to find out the typical cost of IVF treatment in Australia. I apprechaite that costs can vary depending on the treatment but I only need a ball park figure.

Many thanks in advance
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave,

You would be looking at anywhere between $2500 to $3500 out of pocket.
This will be determined by 2 things - whether on emigrating you will be entitled to Medicare and whether you will take out private health insurance. Medicare is our national health system and covers most of the costs of IVF ( thank God! ). However, you will have to be a resident to be able to claim.Private health cover will reimburse some of the in-hospital costs such as the egg pickup and the embryo transfer. Most insurance companies however have a one year waiting period before you can claim and if you decide to take out the cover, ensure it includes IVF .

This is based on my personal experience but I am sure there are others that can give you theirs.

Good luck to you and your wife on emigrating ( you will love Australia! ) and if you do go down the IVF path.

Take care
Donna

Hey DG,
It used to be around $5,000 but now the govt subsidises a cycle. It was a limit of three but I think thats gone now too. Hurrah!
Out of pocket though there are certain drugs which are not covered by medicare and if you belong to a health fund are only slightly rebated. So look towards the 5,000...give or take per cycle.
Best wishes.

There's heaps of IVFers on this site..where are you all?

Someone give DG a heads up on what it might cost him so we can bring another little cherub into this world.

Hi dave_gordon.

We live in Victoria and went through Melbourne IVF . We don't have private insurance and we paid around 2500 out of pocket ... covered by Medicare as well . We reached very quickly the threshold , Medicare Safety Net which helped a lot ...

Good luck and welcome to Brisbane .

Love My Tommy Bub,

Medicare covers most of it , especially due to the introduction of the medicare safety net. Basically, medicare covers 85% of the schedule fee and then 80% of any out of pocket expenses.

To give an eg if the IVF clinic charged $8000, and medicare determined the scheduled fee was $2000 for that, then you would first get 85% of $2000 = $1700. But that means you would be out of pocket $6300 ( $8000 - $1700 ).That is where the medicare safety net kicks in. You would then get back 80% of $6300 = $5040 less I think about $1000 which is the amount you needed to have spent on medical expenses before the safety net kicks in. So in total you would pay IVF clinic $8000 but get back $5740 ($1700+$5040-$1000 ) so you only end up paying $2260 ( still a lot I know but a hell of a lot better than $8000).

Hope that example hasn’t confused you more! It was just to give you an idea of how much Medicare really does help ( financially anyway ) us going through IVF. If your sister is interested in doing IVF please let her contact an IVF clinic and they can explain this whole thing to her. You can also contact medicare and they can give you all this info.

Take Care

Dave, is atificial insemination an option for you and your wife first?
That was the path we took, and we had 3 tries before success. The total medical expenses were approx $2000 (after medicare rebates).
Three tries of IVF would have cost approx $9000!!

Good luck, I wish you every success in emigrating and hope you are both successful in having a baby soon :)
