I am very interested in modern cloth and in my research I have found some good reasons for using cloth.
The cost and environment isn't nessecarily why though.
I have notice ppl get excited about the nappies cos they are so damn cute.
I am very curious to know why you choose to use cloth?

I am in the process of changing over to cloth. The reason I am is because I will save so much money. I don't mind having to do an extra load everyday or 2. With this being child number 5 for me whatever way I can save money then good.

50 % for environmental reasons 50% for health reasons and 10 % for cuteness.
No, i can't add LOL. I dont think i have saved any money because i spend quite a bit on nappies.

 I'm exactly the same.

I use cloth partly coz DD gets rashes from alot of the disposables (woolies homebrand & bebes are about the only ones I can/will buy). I also hate the way they make the bin smell, even if they are tied in plastic bags (thats mainly a summer prob).

I have a problem with cloth tho...they have started to make me spend too much money :D

My DD is allergic to disposables. But I think now that is only a very small part of the reason I love them. They are sooo much more comfortable than sposies, so soft and lovely. They don't have that chemical stench that huggies have, I can't stand it. And they are so very cute.;)

Hi Kymmy
I've just changed over to cloth recently with my second child for a couple of reasons.

MONEY: Firstly, I'll be away from work longer with DS2 so expense of disposables was an issue.
ENVIRONMENT: I do so much around here to conserve energy, reduce, reuse and recycle and then I found that most of the rubbish in the bin was nappies - I felt like a bit of a hypocrite so I thought cloth might clear my green conscience. Since changing, the bin has so much space in it and so I feel good that I'm not contributing to as much landfill.
AESTHETICS: They do look cute! but I must say that I'm going to be careful about getting addicted - they are supposed to save me money (see point 1) And they must be comfortable because he doesn't seem to be in any pain whilst in cloth.
TECHNOLOGY: they actually work which has really pleasantly surprised me. I've been using microfibre cloth and they wash really well and dry quickly - I don't need a huge stash and they don't leak.these are my reasons and I've been really pleased with my decision to convert to cloth.
cheers

health (disposables don't breath and the chemical gels are just too new to know the long term effects)
skin sensitivity (DS gets rashes from disposable wipes and some nappies)
convenience (no ducking to shops to buy nappies late at night, and yes I have a huge stash)
reliability (in the early days we always had a leak with disposables - even premium ones - not so much of an issue now that he's stopped those breastfed poos)
cuteness factor
money (although we've saved less than I originally pitched to DH :o but with number 2 on the way it will still be substantial)

Here's something I've not told others before now: One of the main reasons I decided to use cloth was the cost factor. OK I may have said that previously, but here's an expansion on that answer (I'm feeling the need for shoulders to cry on today:crying: ) I knew from the day I got the BFP with Curtis that I would be a single mother of 2 before too long. My husband actually asked me if it was his baby. :banghead: :crying: So I knew that either before the end of the pregnancy, or in the first few months of Curtis' life, that I would be a single mum. And it looks like that will be happening in the next month or so.
I remember from when I was a single mum to Vallerie, how much of a strain it was to have to buy sposies. Luckily she self-toileted about 6 months after I left him, but then 1 Pull-Up a night ever since still adds up. So when I discovered Bubhub, and learnt about modern cloth, I decided that I would build up a stash so that I would never be forced to choose between food and nappies. :(

Sorry to hear your story the queen.:hugs:

I appreciate your reasons and I understand.
My main concern is in convincing hubby.
He is quite happy to spend 30 a month on nappies for Av and 15 a wk for my boy.
I think if I told him we could convert to mcn for around a grand he might think I have gone crazy. He is likely to say why not use the flats we have.
When I mentioned mcn he said - oh but remember how long you lasted with the girl - 1 day! - actually it was 3 wks! but anyway mcn is a diff story. I also have been crazy knitting soakers and longies so um yeah I am keen to get a practical use out of them.

Oh Queenie :hugs: You poor thing. Lots of hugs coming your way. XX

We decided to use clothes because:
Money - Clothes cost more to start with, but once you have them, you have them! Disposables cost so darn much!
Safety - I'm not 100% convinced that all the chemicals used to treat the materials in disposables are safe.
Cute - I love the cute rounded look of a clothy baby! :D And we got nappies in all different colours too!
Environment - Cloths dont rot in landfills for hundreds of years. When bub grows out of them all you do is cut them up for rags! Perfect!

It never occured to me to use Disgustables... For me, cloth is better as there are no dodgy chemicals, I am not contributing to the 1 tonne per child of rubbish sposies create, and I have better things to do with several thousand dollars!

Im thinking i will use cloth at home, visit to family, but disposables for going out. Cloth i still think (call me old fashioned) is better for babies bum, better for the environment and a lot cheaper. I will be using terry towelling. Thats just my opinion, who knows maybe i will change my mind once i have experimented :p

if you get eenees they are just a cover for a terry nappy, you just fold the nappy into a rectangle and slip it in. its not a pocket, its a little different. this way you're still using terry but getting a snugger fit iykwim

I changed to cloth so i didnt have to see so much money going into the bin. I started with Terry flats, & still use those 90% of the time. I've only gotten a few MCN but love them to death. Yes i buy more, but not that many.

Its no more work really, its fun :smiliedance:

Same here.

I was a cloth nappy baby, so was my brother, cousins etc. Probably a lot of that has to do with my age.

I just could not see why I would purchase disposables which cost a bomb over time, when washing nappies is certainly no drama, unlike when my mother had my brother, and was using a gas copper for washing, because she could not afford a washing machine.

Well I only wished I knew about modern cloth nappies 12 mths ago!! When DS1 was born we used disposable right up until June this year.... I was not keen on using the terry flats (don't even know how to fold one :o ) and the soaking and the pvc pilchers.... but when i stumbled on a thread on bubhub i discovered there was a whole new world!!! So i put it to my dh as we were both fed up buying nappies and having them fall apart or DS1 constantly leaking through (very heavy wetter) to change and to my surprise he said yes!! So now i am busy shopping for more.... only have BBB at the moment but with summer coming up I am on the look out for some AIO so they boys can show them off!!!

Oh Queenie :hugs: I can't believe your husband asked if it was his child.

We're going cloth mostly because it's cheaper, environmentally friendly and I personally believe better for babies skin. We've only got a handful of nappies so far (11) and are loving this whole new world of modern cloth nappies! Can't wait to actually have a baby to put in them...

I'd love to say that I'm trying to save the environment, but the total truth of the matter is that I absolutely DETEST paying for nappies. We're strapped for $$ at the moment so I'm slowly building up my stash, but bub # 2 will be totally cloth, no sposies for going out - I will be a sposie free house, lol - every time I have to buy nappies I cringe, I simply hate paying for them.

We were spending $120 a month on nappies between the 2 kids, so for me the initial switch was money.
But now I am more aware of environmental stuff. They look super cute & dd seems to be a bit allergic to sposies if she wears them too often.

Ds still wears sposies though as Greens Pockets are too small for him (he's 2) & I cant justify spending $$ on Larger sized nappies. I do put him in terry flats occasionally though... he calls them his "white pappy"!! :p

60% comfort and the whole idea of getting around in plastic
40% environment
