View Full Version : ABA breastfeeding education classes
Has anyone attended the ABA's breastfeeding education classes... they are designed for expectant parents and cost $70 for 3 and a half hours. This also includes free membership and subscription to thier mag (worth $50).
Is it a good workshop/class? Is it worth the money? I would really like to be armed with all I can to have a good chance of successfully b/feeding when bubs arrives. All I seem to hear are stories about how hard it is and that it is easier to ff and not to feel guilty!
 I didnt go, meant to get around to it but didnt find the time. After I had bubs I REALLY REALLY wished I had gone. I'm sure even if you only come away with one hot tip it will be worth it and you should get some good contacts. It sounds much more expensive than the one I looked into though!:D
After you have your baby and you have breastfeeding issues you can always go to the breastfeeding clinic (most maternity hospitals have it) where they have lactation consultants there to help guide and assist you with your baby. You can go for half a day, a full day or just have an appointment with an LC - and the best thing it is FREE (covered by medicare).
unfortunately they were too far away for me in my area, but definately worth it to get a head start on breastfeeding, 70 dollars is cheap if you never need to buy formula...also the baby bonus could be used to pay for it...also you get given free booklets and i think they have a promotion where you can get a free book atm, and the book itself is worth 35 dollars...yes you can tell i would've lliked to go myself...:D
good luck with it:)
Yeah meme, it comes with a free subscription to their mag (worth $50), free ABA membership and it goes for 3 and a half hours. DH can also come along for free.
I did the course last month and found it really useful. I feel much more confident about breastfeeding, when bubs arrives. The info was much more comprehensive than the antenatal classes and they had a couple of breastfeeding mums who did a demo and then answered questions. It is much easier actually seeing someone doing it, than reading a booklet/watching a video.
As previously mentioned you get a years subscription to ABA (which includes a phone line you can call with any BF problems) and a really great book called Breastfeeding naturally.
I would highly recommend doing the course.

I was wondering if they had bf classes in Australia.
I have never heard of them b4.
I know it is more common place in the US for example, to attend a bf class.
$70 is expensive though, I think.
The 70 bucks includes a sub to the ABA? That might be more worthwhile then....

I guess $70 does seem excessive but the information you may glean from these classes may make all the difference to whether your breastfeeding journey is successful or not. It may make absolutely no difference but if you find you need to turn to formula to feed your bub then you will be looking at more than $10/week for formula. The $70 sounds reasonable in comparison. Good luck with your decision and with the birth of your bub!:)
