Ok, so you know the one where you attach a wedding band to a piece of thread and hold it over your belly and it shows you the gender of your baby according to which way it swings? (in circles for a girl or side to side for a boy)
Well my mother used to hand-rear baby birds and she reckons the ring test was right 19 times out of 20 when assessing their gender.
And they were having a discussion on it in ingender, and it seemed to work for most of the people there too.
Apparently you're meant to get someone else to do it for you instead of doing it yourself. But I get the same results whether I do it myself or allow someone else to.
Has anyone here done it? And if so, was it accurate? It'd be interesting if people who are pregnant and already know the gender of their baby could do it and see if its accurate for them.
I'm wondering if its an old wives tale or if there is actually some scientific basis behind it, like maybe males and females send out different ions and stuff that the ring picks up? (I'm pretty sure ions isn't the word I'm looking for but you know what I mean. Lol.)
Ohhh, yeah I did it a few times when pregnant and it showed to be a boy and I had a boy!
I think it's always been accurate for friends too, I don't know why, it is a bit wierd and have always wondered.
I even read this article once (ages and ages ago) where there was this gender study using these types of things, and this one was the most accurate. Gees I wish I had saved it, I can't remember if it was an article from a magazine or on a website or on tv?
I also was told the first dream yuo have when pregnant (ie. with a baby in it and if it's male or female) is what the gender will be, this was true for me too.
But with the string and ring, sometimes I think it's our sub-consiance (however its spelt :o) that maybe already knows due to hormones??? maybe?

We did this test for both our bubbas. The first time we did it, it spun both my hubby and I out. Hubby even said "You're not moving that are you?" Did it a few times throughout the pregnancy and each time it was the same. Said boy and we had a gorgeous little man. Tried it out 2nd pregnancy but only did it 2-3 times. always the same. Said boy and had another gorgeous little man.
We used a piece of my hair and my wedding ring.

I have done it during this pregnancy and it goes in circles- girl!! I was also told this week at my 20 week ultrasound girl!!
I cant really remember doing it with my 2 boys though!!! :)
I really believe in this test. When I do it over my hand or belly it comes up with two boys and then a girl and that is exactly what we have. After our girl it stops indicating we wont have any more chn - which is exactly how we want it. I have tested it out on my mum, both my sister's and it is also true for my friend.
when i was pregnant it was different everytime i did it, and then some ppl said circles is a girl others said circles is a boy
the first person to do it to me though seemed to know what she was talking about and she said boy which is what i had

Naw, people are finally posting in my thread. I love you guys. :hugs:As I said, my mum said it was right 19 times out of 20 when she was sexing baby birds. Does anyone know how early it works though? I am only 8 weeks along but everytime I have done it it goes in circles (girl.) And my uncle did it to me and he is good at it because he can even divine water with sticks, and it also swung in circles. But I don't want to get my hopes up, so maybe its too early to tell?
I can't remember what it said when I was pregnant with all my boys lol. This time I couldn't remember which direction meant what, so I held the ring over my youngest boys head and it swung back and forth. Put it over my belly - round and round. Over DS4's head - back and forth. All in the same sitting!
20 week ultrasound says it's a girl.

Wow. Sounds like it DOES really work. Must be the different electrical impulses males and females put out. Yay!

Obviously it doesn't work for everyone, but it seems to work for most people. On ingender it had about an 80% success rate. One lady was saying how she was pregnant with boy twins, and it always swung in a line, stopped, then swung in a line again. (Indicating boys.) Then she got a really heavy period and when she tried next time it didn't do anything at all. It was a sad story. So that lady is obviously a big believer in the thread test.I really think there is something to it.
Im 33 weeks PG with a baby girl. Hadnt done this test till now, so thought id try it for you.
Definatley spins in circles, so girl :D

Ah excellent. Thats what I've been wanting. People who already know their baby's gender to ask the thread. Thanks for posting! Mine swung in circles too but I have a long time to wait to find out the sex.
No worries :D i definatley wouldnt put money on it  but it seems to be acurate for quite a few ppl. Good luck hun, and lets hope bub co-operates when you wanna find out ;)
i normally do it over my palm, first one says boy and i had a boy. second one says girl and i feel like its a girl so i will let you know in 8 weeks when i find out. then it goes on to say another boy.
if i do it over my stomach its a very strong circle so fingers crossed.
OMG .. This is unbelievable... theres got to be a science behind this , if its so accurate ...I am secretly hoping its wrong .. as i really want a lil princess !heheh !Goodluck to all !
When I was pg with DS1 it went round and round...
When I was pg with DS2 it went side to side...
So was only half right for me!
Plus, friends and I once did the test where it tells you how many kids & what gender you'll have in the future (by dangling the ring over your belly and letting it do its thing until it stops).
Mine said Boy,Girl, Boy. So far I have 2 boys. So not quite accurate for me in that instance either :(
can i ask where this test stems from? spiritual? cultural?
this really freaks me out.....i took my wedding band and tied a string of my hair around it and dangled it over a pillow for about a minute and it did nothing, just say there. as soon as i put it over my hand i had BIG circle motions. that creeps me out a bit but hey, apparently there is a little girl in there :yelclap::goodvibes::cloud9:
i rmemeber doing this test and not being able to believe it. after playing around for a while i noticed if i was thinking its a boy boy boy it would give the boy result or if i was thinking its a girl it would be girl. i honestly did not feel i was moving it in anyway:confused: maybe thats why u are meant to get someone else to do it so your own opinion cant interfere?

i'll have to get DH to do it for me when he gets home from the school run. i thought i would give it a go just to see. it will freak him out. i was trying to hard to keep it straight that my hands were almost shaking. i won't tell DH which way it has to go or what its even meant to do....see what happens :detective:
grrr i got DH to do it and the ring did NOTHING. as soon as i held the string, the ring goes bizerk. why???

I got my Hubby to do it a couple of times ..also got a friend to do it .. sure enough it swings back and forth indicating a boy ! let us know how your hubby goes with this ?? i will be waiting to know ! hhee

the ring did not move at all with DH! he thinks i'm a nutter (hes probably right) but as soon as i touch the string, the ring went crazy. i will have to get a friend to do it :banghead:
Someone asked about the origin of the ring test. I think it stems from Wicca or something similar. They use pendulums for a lot of stuff. Similar principal.
I did the test with both previous pregnancies and have gotten boy both times (before finding out the sex).. Haven't done it this time, cant get my ring off

Thought i'd give this a go and at first it swung side to side then it started spinning in a circle then it went side to side again
So who knows??? Guess i'll just have to wait until birth......
mothersmilk: it goes through all of your pregnancies before it comes to a complete stop. so going by what you said u're gonna have / already have 3 kiddies.
when my friend did it for me it said boy, boy, girl girl (im stopping at three tho). ive heard tho that circles are boys and side to side is girls. theres too many conflicting stories for me to believe it either way. guess i'll find out in 12 days what this bub will most likely be.

Hi there
Just a quick question. I was intrigued by this thread so DH and I tried it this afternoon. I am not currently pregnant but I am in the TWW so I might be. I already have a DD. So the ring starts off in circles then swung side to side. Does this mean I am going to have a girl and then a boy OR did it spin in circles for a girl because I already have DD and then swung side to side because we will have a son next time? Thanks for your help.
I just did the ring test and i put my E-Ring over my belly with my hair (DF is asleep so i had to do it myself) and i got GIRL - slowed down - BOY.
I then tried it over my Left open palm and freakily got the exact same result!
Me and DF did the test earlier too, about a month or so ago, and i got Girl-Boy then as well :)
Ill update you guys because i have my Gender/anatomy scan on Monday the 22nd :D
(Oh and according to our first test - DF is having a boy too ;p.)

grrr i got DH to do it and the ring did NOTHING. as soon as i held the string, the ring goes bizerk. why??? Alot of people can't seem to do it for some reason. I asked my partner and also my father to do it for me and nothing happened.
APPARENTLY women are better at doing it than men for some reason.
Although having said that, my grandmother couldn't do it either.
I do know only some people can do it. It works really well for me....
It goes in a line when I hold it over DS's head, does nothing when I hold it over the doona etc.
But you're not meant to be able to do it on yourself. I think its because as someone else pointed out, if you do it on yourself you might be guiding it subconsciously toward the sex you WANT your baby to be.

i will have to wait till i catch up with a friend :geek:. i couldn't believe how much it was swinging for me and nothing for DH...i felt like a fool as he thought it was ridiculous to begin with :gloomy:
Ok so i said i did the ring test and got 1st baby - GIRL and 2nd baby - BOY.
Had our U/S on Monday - GIRL! :D
so it's right for our first baby :)

I tried this out twice before learning the gender of my baby. The first time my boss at work did the test on me at 16 weeks using my wedding ring and a piece of my hair over my palm. It strongly indicated a boy (swung backwards and forwards). Then a week later my mum did it using my wedding ring and a piece of thread, this time holding it over my belly. It indicated a boy. Then at 18 weeks and 4 days I had my anatomy scan and it revealed that it is in fact a girl. I didn't mind either way on the gender - but I must say that the two tests had me pretty convinced it was a boy - but nope, I'm having a girl :)

Hi, this was fun to do, I first tried it with my hair and my wedding band and all it was doing was going straight, back and forth, so I thought maybe my wedding band is too heavy, so I tried with a sewing needle and it started in a circle, then another circle and then a straight line and the line just wouldnt stop so Im assuming thats it for me 3 kids and thats all we want, pretty freaky;). I have 2 girls and not pregnant yet, so we'll see what happens:wave:
I'll see if it works with my husband when he comes home??
my friend did this for me with my wedding ring and my hair over my palm and it came up boy, boy, girl. found out today that the sonographer is 99% certain that bub is a girl. kinda strong feelings she's right as with both my boys at the anatomy scan they showed us their 'bits' straight away. they were so obvious whereas this one there wasnt anything on show

I said I'd wait to see what happens when my husband comes home, well how funny is this, my husband had this done to him years ago and it also said girl, girl, boy, so we've got our girls:yelclap:, so I wonder if it is true when we have our third.
WE had the family over for one of my kids b'days and I bought up this...so everyone lined up for a turn as it always worked for me with each child and gender..always correct!! I used their hair and their ring...and everytime it came up with the gender they had and the # of children they had and stopped when they stopped having children! This included my mum, aunty (even picked up my aunties deceased little boy of more than 38 yrs ago). Also with my hubby..it picked up his 1st child with his ex..then our 4. Good fun!
