Homework - Year 8/9, how much do your kids do?

Just a quick question for those of us with the big kids. How much homework is your year 8 or year 9 child doing???

My ds is in Yr 8 and he has homework around 3 nights a week, sometimes more if they have an assignment due. He has a weekly maths sheet plus will sometimes have some book work for maths too, he usually has english h/w once a week, atm he has to summarise chapters in a book. Sometimes he has an opportunity at school to do homework so he doesn't have to do it at home.

My ds is in Yr 12, and so the answer for him is much different now, but I found that different schools set a very different amount of homework. My neice in Yr 8 has at least 2 hours homework, 4 nights a week and usually works on assignments 2-3 hours at the weekend. Different people need to do a different amount of homework too. My dd worked very hard on assignments but did not bring home a lot of homework, while ds 1 brought home hardly any and ds2 struggled to finish his; and they all attended the same school, often had the same teachers, each 2 years apart.

My sister is in year 8 and spends at least 2-3hrs every night. She also spends a lot of time on weekends doing assignments. She is a perfectionist though and enjoys school!
I'm at uni and I sware she has more assignments then me!

2-3 hours a night plus time on weekends seems cruel for a 13 year old kid.

Homework has gone a little crazy it seems.

Way to much. DD has homework everynight from every class. SHe gets home at 4.10, starts homework right away, eats dinner, back to homework, shower at 8.30 and bed, they she is up at 5 again finishing off, she has to leave at about 6.15 for school.....i rang up the school and told them she WON'T be doing it, she is so tired, (We live on an island so its a trek to school), she has no life outside of school, its far to much, its all bull **** crap anyhow that will never be needed in life, and she is only in grade 8 so its ridiculous. THey werent to happy bout me complaining but its so much its crazy, wouldnt even expect a senior to have as much as she does.

Year 8........ 1 hr
Year 9 ....... 1 1/2hrs
Year 10....... 2 hrs
Year 11....... 2 1/2 hrs


That's everyday including weekend. My DD is very quick so it must much more for those who struggle.

My DD has homework everynight week night. We do home reading and spelling words which would be about 30 minutes tops :yes:

Thanks for the replies. My DS seems to some weeks have none or very little and then some weeks suddenly hours and hours so that he is getting up early to finish it :no:
