That wants mentors. Lets put it out there. I know I suck, but I really want to make the most of my camera and my subjects. I welcome critique. Gentle critique!

So here are some that I sort of like.

You don't suck! :) .. First of all, can I ask what type of camera you're using, and if you shoot in auto mode, so I can help?

Sankewe! I have a DSLR 450 and I have a 18-55 and a 55-250. I shoot in all sorts really... I try and use the close up when applicable (or just when I like the effect) Most of these are with my big cheese on manual focus. (If you could only see the stupid faces I'm making while trying to emote how strange this feels)

If you really want critique I'm happy to help, I hope I don't sound too harsh! On #1 and #4 you have a focus issue.. #1, focus fell on the bike behind him, and #4 focus fell on the branch in front of the pole rather then her. Manual focus for little moving subjects it tough! Just keep practicing.. When I'm focusing on a person, I make sure I'm focusing on the tear duct if that makes any sense.

Exposure wise, #2 would be your strongest, It would have been even better if it was cropped horizontally with her to the right of the frame.

Have you thought about trying to shoot in manual mode at all (manual with your settings, rather then just manually focusing)?

You're kiddies are cute! :)

THANKYOU!!! You aren't at all harsh. Yeah, I so see that about the bike. - so true.

#2 lots of empty space... a horizontal crop makes so much sense.

Thanks so much!

PS I think they're lovely

I hope to keep trying and growing.

ALL OTHER NEWBIES UNITE!!! I'll bump if I have too!

No worries! Just keep taking photos whenever you have time.. You'll start spotting errors and things you don't like and change them as you're shooting, rather then see them later when you're loading them onto the computer.

Oh my goodness! LOL.. I was just looking at your photos again, and I only just caught the little cat face peering through the last one up in the tree.. Funny

I'm a complete amatuer with a dslr pentax K100D. I have no idea how to use it apart from pointing at my subject and pushing the button! I really should learn the settings.

I have a couple of photos I'd like to share (though, i'd say it's pure luck they turned out at all). But i dont know how to get them on here!!!

Please help?!

I'm definatley no pro but from an amatures point of view my best tips shoot raw and use autofocus... I thought at first I should be using manual focus and generally speaking it is better. However after speaking to alot of pros who have poor eyesight and seeing they use it too I didn't feel bad at all lol. As for raw it will give you more control over you image once you edit because it includes all exif data so you could easily fix some exposure issues.

What gorgeous photos ladies!

I'd love to join this thread.... I am very much an amateaur.

Always loved taking photos, and my DH bought me a Cannon 50D last year with a 17-85mm lense. I did a digital photography course for 5 weeks which was a lot of fun and learnt heaps. Now its just a matter of practicing and keeping on learning....

I also joined the camera club they run and have my first outing this saturday where we are going down to the Mornington Penninsula and taking some beach photos/beach boxes etc.... looking forward to it!

I'll see if I can post some pics and of course like someone else said any gentle critiscism more than welcome! I know I have a long long long way to go, and with a moving little 3 yo that wont sit still its hard work!!

Fuchsia that's a beautiful picture it has great DOF and it looks pretty crisp. To avoid the shadows in the eyes though I would try using flash as a fill and it would also creat some nice catchlights.

he was actually all the way down the front of the yard, i was using my long zoom lens cause it was raining and didn't want my camera wet! lol

whats DOF? I have no idea about camera lingo! Whenever i use the flash its so bright and make the picture go all yucky.

Thanks itty :)

Sorry depth of field the blur in the back ground. There should be an option on your camera to use flash as fill. With an external flash you can control the power. Oh yeah and I meant to add yes the flash wouldn't reach that far unless it was a really powerfull external flash.

Ok thanks, I need to have a fiddle with my camera and see what it can do. I hope soon i will have the money to go and do a course.
