It will be ok if I do a piece of topside in a slow cooker, won't it? As I can't get meat from my usual butcher I was going to use a supermarket piece of beef but want it to be really tender hence prefer to slow cook it. As long as I put some liquid in should be ok? (and make plenty of gravy to have with it!)

Any tips?

you could do a pot roast?

add in a couple of tins of tomatoes, some herbs, veges, beef stock, onions, garlic, chilli (if you want).

YUM that's what i want now - i just have a boring old corned beef

PS it helps to brown it in the frypan first

I dunno....a slow cooker stews things, it doesn't roast them. So...I don't think it would TASTE like roast meat....

But I've never done it, so I'm just guessing really!

Good luck with it. If you do do it let us know how it goes, please?

i've never done a roast style meal in the slow-cooker, but any meat that was sticking out the top of my stews, never went brown or crispy really.

So i think its probably better as a stew (and in that case, make sure there isn't a layer of fat on the piece of meat :barf: i forgot to get rid of it, and OMG, i had a layer of fat across my stew about half a cm thick when it cooled).

If you really want it as a roast, i would make a pot roast

I have done heaps if roast In the slow cooker - lamb being my favourite. Invert a couple of saucers in the bottom of the slow cooker you don't want the meat sitting init's juices as this will stew it. Brown the meat (don't have to but it will look like a roast) chuck in garlic cloves and herbs of choice a little water to come up side of saucers and cook for about 8 hr slow or 4 hr high. Timing is always a bit tricky for me though. We usually pull the meat apart with tongs as it is super juicy. Drain the liquid at bottom of slowcooker for best gravy ever!

I just put in the meat, turn on the slow cooker and 6-7 hours later the meat just falls apart... I serve it with warm dinner rolls and gravy, yumm! I do this with beef, lamb and pork. :)

I always cook my roast beef in the slow cooker.

Just put a little oil in the bottom, with your veggies and then chuck the meat on top. I chuck a few cloves of garlic and some herbs.

When its about 1/2hr before you ready take the veggies out and out them in the oven to crisp them up. Its soo yummy!

Oh thanks everyone - some good tips there! Yes I figured it won't 'brown' but then I don't want a crisp outer, more tender meat (my Dad hasn't got a lot of teeth :o) and I love everything else in the slow cooker. I will let you know how it goes.

I might do it on high as Im not too organised yet!

I always do my roast beef in the slow cooker now.....

I place a saucer or bowl upside down on the bottom & sit my roast on that so it doesnt boil iykwim?

I then put 1/4 cup red wine, packet of french onion soup mix & 1/2 cup of stock.
Cook on low for at least 8 hours, obviously depending on how big your roast is!

:chef: Good Luck!!!

Just reporting back - I browned the piece of meat quickly in a pan on all sides (well all that I could without it falling over :p) and just put it straight into the cooker and did it on high for about 5 hours. It was fine, very tender - I could still carve it into slices, but very tender and tasty. I did the vegies in the oven as it's a reasonably small slow cooker.

Think I might have to do another one some time soon!
