A RED kangaroo that is goaded into fighting a human clown is the star attraction at a festival in the US designed to celebrate Australia.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the BorderFest festival in Hidalgo, Texas, features an event called Rocky Show Circus, involving two kangaroos and their owner, Javier Martinez, who dons the clown suit.
The festival is sponsored by Kraft, the US owners of Vegemite.
The report says Mr Martinez baits the kangaroo by pushing it and poking it before placing it in a headlock.
If Rocky fights back too much, Mr Martinez's wife Sandra restrains it using a heavy tether attached to a harness around the animal's chest.

thats friggen disgusting, why is this allowed to happen?!?! :barf:

Apparently it isn't allowed to happen. I heard on the news today that this has been stopped and that it has caused public outcry.

I should think so.

I would have thought it would have breached their animal welfare laws.

That Javier sounds like a real charmer.

Anyway, the best way is to boycott rubbish like that. It only exists because it has an audience.

I remember when I went to Vietnam on holiday a few years ago, it seemed very popular to have chained up monkeys on the street for entertainment. If stupid tourists didn't give them money, surely the industry wouldn't exist.

This is so disguting and sad.
Apparently the 'owner' of the roo has been investigated for animal cruelty in the past.
The worst part is that the show was supposed to be a promotional thing for Australian culture!

the saddest part of this, aside from the obvious animal cruelty side of it, is that people in Texas actually thought they were honouring Australia by allowing this to happen!!!

urgh, some people are complete and utter morons.

Its a disgraceful display of animal cruelty.

But ..... it all stems back to the Boxing Kangaroo that Australia invented in the first place.

Are you refering to the flag? coz IMO there is a big difference between the picture drawn up of a boxing Kangaroo and actually putting a live Kangaroo into a boxing ring with an idiot boxing with them.

If this clown reckons he is brave enough to fight a big red, then let him....without harnessing the animal for God's sake....then we will see how smart he really is.

What a moron.

Its a disgusting thing and made me sick watching it.

I am very glad this has been stopped. Poor kangaroo i hope they let it go. No doubt the kangaroo will probably maul the first human it sees thanks to the agression built up and the fact that he's been teased.

Poor thing, its just not right.

I was eating dinner when this came up on the news. I was very glad that I'd already finished or I wouldn't have ended up eating at all.
What made it worse, methinks, is that the woman apologised for offending Australian culture.
Personally, I would have thought any decent human being would have been offended by it, not just Australia.

This is no different to what happens in a circus.
Kangaroo boxing was widely encouraged in Australia until it found disfavour.

The boxing kangaroo image is actually a military icon. Alan Bond ripped off the design from the Aussie military who used it to differentiate Aussie planes and ships from British ones during the Second World War as Australia was fighting under the British flag (AIF). After using it during the America's Cup in '83, Bond then sold it to the Australian Olympic Committee who makes a motza from it.

I can see how the Americans would attribute this practice to Australians as it was something that happened a lot in Australia's history up to the '60s.

What I don't understand is how a person is allowed to keep a protected animal for commercial purposes which is in breach of Australia's wildlife export laws.

The abuse of kangaroos for the sake of a few dollars and entertainment for some sick, inhumane individuals is a complete disgrace and an atrocity alone.
