View Full Version : For what reasons can I have a c section?
What will allow me to be able to have a caesarean?
Illness?
Complications?
Hi. If you shop around you should be able to find an ob who will do one just because that is what you choose.
May I ask, what are your reasons for wanting a c/s? I'm not anti-c/s at all, just wondering! I would suggest though if this is your first pregnancy and you are thinking of a c/s due to fear of childbirth or your ability to cope with labour, that there are many steps you can take if you choose to to help you prepare for a vaginal birth, or even just to find out more about it so you can make an informed decision.
If you are going with the public system they wont do a c/s unless there is a medical reason, which could be...
placenta praevia( placenta covering the cervix)
breech
large bub small pelvis
severe high blood pressure
multiple babies
placenta accreta(placenta attached to uterine wall)..
or if you are a private patient you can have one done electively without any reason, I have had 3 caesars because of a grade 4 placenta praevia on all occasions, if you seriously want a caesar then your best bet would be to go private.

Ok, thanks for the info.
The want for a c section is nothing to do with fear of natural birth pain, coz im really really good with pain.
It is my first but not my partners first and sadly because of complications from a natural birth of his first, his daughter has never been able to stand, talk or even recognise her mother or father in her life. All could have been prevented through a c section.
I understand that that won't mean it will happen to me. But I don't want to put him through it.
Also and equally, the want for the c section is due to being very petite and I fear that this will hurt the baby. I understand that many petite women have had natural births just fine. But I may be an exception. Sorry for the TMI but I have never been able to use tampons because there are none made small enough, and I tear almost evey time I have intercourse. I am still in childrens size 10-12 to give you an idea of how petite I am and I'm nearly 23.
The third reason is that I just know in my mind something is going to go wrong. I'm not a negitave person, but I do believe in listening to your gut feelings. Now im trying to work out if it will be because of my countless uterus operations or something like pre eclampsia which my mother had.
My partner can stop stressing if we know I can get that c section. So im fingers crossed for it.

Aww sorry to hear of your partners daughter but what an amazing lil girl she must be:hugs:
If you explain all this (whats above) to the hospital i cant see why they would not allow you to have a c-section.
I had an elective c-section for psychalogical reasons with my last and went through a public hospital. at my very first appointment i stated i wanted a c-section and they agreed with out knowin why or my history with my son who was delivered by emergency c-section at 36 weeks at a different hospital. So it can be done for both psycological and physical reasons.
GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS

Hi Ourbaby. I think you would definitely be making the right choice to seek an elective c/s based on both your partner's previous experience and your own feelings about your ability to birth. You mentioned you'd had uterus operations - that should be a medical reason for an elective, I think it's considered similarly to if you'd had a previous caesarean - any scarring of the uterus can increase risks in a vaginal birth. If you don't want to go into the rest of your history, just ask about the previous surgeries you've had as I think that should be reason enough!
And anyway, I personally think a woman should be able to choose to have an elective for no other reason than that she wants one, provided she is thoroughly informed! I admit, I didn't feel this way before I had gone through labour and a c/s, but now I don't see a c/s as being the "big bad" almost worst case scenario a lot of people make it out to be. You need to choose what you believe will be safest for your bub and for both you and your partner mentally.

The official reason for my c-section is because the baby was breech, but given the fact that I have a medical history of anxiety and I was in no way prepared psychologically for a vaginal birth my ob said he would have given me a c-section anyway. You can have a c-section on psychological grounds and I think if you tell them your story that will be reason enough to give you one.
I will be having one because in my early 20s I had a massive fibroid (size of 5 month pregnancy) that was attached to the wall of my uterus - so from that it's scarred ... may have to take my bub early too (but we'll see!)
this time round, I'll look pregnant ... and get a little person at the end of it all :)
