Hi all

Im just wondering if any of you have rented or are currently renting a department of housing home? I know its a personal matter so if you would prefer to pm i understand.

What i want to know is:

1. How do i go about applying for it?
2. How long is the wait?

3. What kind of price is rent?
4. How long are the leases usually for?
5. Are they clean and tidy? (and im not saying this to be judgemental- im just asking a friend of mine rented one in sydney and it was infested with roaches)
6. DOes it go on my income? What happens if i get an increase in my income?

Im in Brisbane

I live in bris as well. I don't actually live in a department of housing home but did apply for one almost two years ago. The waiting lists are quite long and can take up to 10 years or more. What suburbs you pick also determins how long you will wait. I picked all fairly inner city suburbs and was told there was about a 9 year wait on most of them.
As far as i know the houses are quite clean. Once the previous tenant moves out, they strip the houses (remove all the carpet, curtains, etc..) so it is upto you to get floor covering and curtains,etc..
The rent is based on income and if you do start earning more, your rent will go up.

To apply, I called the department of housing and they sent the forms out, i took them in. Then they sent out a letter not long after and i had to go back for an "interview". They just finished off putting all the details in the computer and that was it. They send you out a letter every year just confirming all your details, you just have to send that back to stay on the list.

Hope that was some help.
