Our 11 day old bub has very dry scaly skin and we were wondering if anyone had some advice about bathing products for newborns that don't dry the skin (e.g. soap free, fragrance free, etc??). Her dry skin is definitely the product of her baths as it gets worse after. I tried some vegetable baby soap and some Johnson & Johnson baby milk - but both ended with the dry skin. Any advice???

QV make a range. You can get it from the chemist hun. They specialise in dry skin.
Alpha Keri oil solved this problem for us. After 12 months his skin stopped being bothered so much and is much less prone to dryness.
We use 'Alfa Kari Oil'
It is Brilliant:yes:
It is great!! Especially for dry, scaily skin.
Be careful, because bub's get's REALLY slippery after bathing in it!;)

Thanks guys - very helpful. Do you use the Alpha Keri Oil or QV on the hair too? Where do you buy the Alpha Keri Oil?

Congratulations Katyjane!!
Firstly, you may know this already, but it's not recommended that newborns are bathed everyday- it's not neccessary and can dry out their skin (as you know). Every few days is fine! (unless they have a poo explosion in between  )
Soap is not needed- warm water is great on it's own. But if you want to add mositure to her skin, forget normal baby washes etc because they strip natural oils from the skin and will add to the prob, even the soap free ones. I use a tiny bit of QV oil in both my kids' baths, it's fantastic.
Hope this helps!
You can get Alpha Keri Oil from any chemist, in various size bottles and pump packs.
Safe to use all over, as just an oil (ie for massage), in shower, bath, hair, everything.
And a little bit goes a looooong way, so it was pretty economical for us really.
As someone else mentioned though, just be careful when you get bubs out of the bath, they do get slippery! It gives them a good protective coating. :)
You can also use sorbolene cream instead of soap, which is actually a moisturiser so that works well. Prehaps try not bathing your baby as much? It sounds grotty, but i rarely bathed DD as a newborn. It was winter, and they dont need to be bathed daily as someone else said, so i just gave DD a wipe over most afternoons with a warm washer, its not like they run around and play in the dirt all day:laughing: She never had dry skin so it worked for me :)

my DS had the same problem as a newborn and i was told not to use anything but water in the bath and to use sorbelene cream or QV kids balm after wards. it took a while for ds's skin to not be so dry (and he had the worst cradle cap ever lol) but it worked :D

I got told to put bicarbe soda in the water...just shake a lil in.
He had a terribe case of bubbles on his forehead & cradle cap...& it cleared it up realy well.
Go the Alpha Keri oil, it works a treat
Any range where the product is basically essential oils, such as Gaia or Baby Organics.
Try and avoid any other commercial washes that contain SLS, as these are not good for anyone, let alone a baby's skin. This is the foaming agent, so you'll find that SLS free products don't foam up as much.
You also don't need to use any product at all. Newborns can be bathed in just water.
Also look at your water supply. If it's like ours it's loaded with chlorine. We have drinking, bath and shower filters.
If you are BF'ing look at your diet as well.
My DS was getting dry patches too, and after a week or so of cutting out most sugary foods from my diet, the patches disappeared and his skin was perfect.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. Am only new to bub hub and I can't believe how helpful everyone is.. don't know how other mums did without it when there was no net....???
I tried Sorbolene but it didn't work so I think I'll head to the chemist and give the Alpha Keri or the QV a go. And I won't bathe bub every day anymore - perhaps every second or third day.
Thanks again. x

I use Gaia and it is great!!! DS has no more dry skin or cradle cap!!
Hi
My daughter had very dry skin and eczema from the time she was born.
I found the best thing when she was little was olive oil (yep - just the regular type you would use in the kitchen!). I added about 1 tablespoon into her bath water.
It was great for her skin and cradle cap too but best of all it was really cheap!!!
 This was recommended to us by a midwife at our hospital.

I recommend nothing in the water in the early weeks and follow the bath with a sorbolene massage.
As they get a bit older, I tend to alternate between QV oil and the Huggies bath wash and still follow up with a massage of sorbolene or lotion.
I hope your baby's skin improves
:)
My 4 week old DD also has this problem, her whole head is dry and scaly now and the skin just flakes off! We were told not to use anything at all except for sorbolene but I even find that this makes her skin a bit oily after we put it on.
It should clear up soon though and it is a natural thing that most newborns go thru
All the best
Kate

We use QV as well as DD is getting quite dry skin in the winter.
It's very good
My DD had very dry skin when she was a baby. Our doctor recommend us to put sorbolene cream. I worked very well.

Dry skin is a common thing with a newborn.... I stay away from J & J products - there are so many chemicals in them. IMO the best products to use on babys skin is the Julique range - all natural, no nasties. The baby bath oil is so good, and the massage oil is also great. You can buy it from David Jones or Myer and they last for ages.
