View Full Version : How to get bubs to take medication
How do we all get our bubs to take medication? I have to give zantac but it always comes dribbling out again...also teething relief, panadol
My DS used to take it really easily but DD...no hope...it just won't stay in and when it does its never the whole dose
Any tips?
Might sound silly but I just use a palin bottle teat. It works like a charm. Otherwise go to your chemist, they would have something.
We use a little plastic syringe and have never had any worries. We have a rare child that gets excited at the sight of the syringe...and runs TOWARDS the medicine. Hope it lasts! :fingerscrossed:
The few times that he has chucked a tanty, we have made sure he was lying down, and syringed it in and angled it to the side and it has gone done easily.

 My kids are the same. I put it down to having to have Zantac 3 times a day for the first 8mths.
I used a syringe to give both my kids Zantac, DD loved it straight away DS would try really hard to spit it back at me. Eventualy he got the hang of it and would take it no problems.
I now get tantrums from DS if DD needs medication and he doesn't

I have a child that loves medicine too! When DD2 gets any, DD1 comes up and says, 'i feel sick too.....' with a supposedly sick look on her face! Priceless! :D
I have found with both DDs, that getting one of the thinner droppers, and angling it to the side of their mouth worked well, as they can't get their tongue there quick enough to push it out. The ones you get with Childrens Nurofen are good too, as it seems to come out easier i think....

Jaxon too loves to get his medicine, i always thought he was strange now i know he's not alone....lol
Anyway, i got a plastic syringe from a cheap shop (prices plus) in QLD, not sure if anywhere else sells them, and it has a custom made teat that fits on the end of it, that can be taken off for easy cleaning......such a brilliant idea i thought.....

We use a dropper that comes with the baby panadol.....
I turn it into a game....I tickle him and when he smiles i drop half in his mouth and tell him how Yummy it is and tickle him some more....he's so engrossed in the *game* that he forgets he's swallowing medicine!

Just a note that Zantac can not be mixed with anything including juice, milk or water.

well Ladies, here in Switzerland, most of the kids' meds go, yes, that's right, up the pooper as a suppository! it's no fuss and effective and you're guaranteed the correct dosage (no sick/spitting out) but little man always makes a slightly concerned facial expression  and goes completely still..
if it's not a 'bottom bullet', i just put it on a teaspoon and down the hatch it goes.

Though my DS has little trouble taking his medicines (mylanta, teething relief), recently he had a bad dose of the flu and needed three courses of antibiotics at 5ml per dose, 3 times a day (plus the above mentioned as well). To give it all to him through droppers, which he has no trouble with, would have been too much, so we got a medicate dummy from Coles.
Basically, it is a dummy (teat) that screws onto a small medicine cup. You measure the dose and give it to bub like a normal dummy. They suck it out and you can be sure they are getting the right dosage. I think it was about $5.
It was great for us, I hope this helps you out.

Our kids also love taking medicine!
We use the syringe that comes with the Dymadon paracetamol liquid
The Dymadon tastes much better than the Panadol and comes in a bigger bottle for less $

if you cant sneak it into juice - here is what i have to do - hold amber upside down (laying on her back across my knees) then dribble bits into her mouth in between the fighting haha
thing is its really hard to spit when your laying on your back with your head tilted back and if you just close her jaw they usually swallow naturally...
having siad that - it doesnt always work - good luck

hi, my children both hated taking the panadol range of medicine, i started using nurofen cos it has a yummy orange flavour and they both love it, the 10mth old i give in a syringe and just put it in her mouth slowly till she drinks it all....go to the chemist and ask them for something nicer tasting... i mean have you tasted the cherry flavour panadol... YUCK!! i wouldnt even want to drink it!
