i basically demand feed. i wait until my baby tells me she wants a feed. but i am now noticing that the only time she will take a feed is when she is ready for a nap or during the night if she wakes. she's 13 months.

just wondering what other mums do.. ? worried that when she drops down to 1 nap from 2 she won't be getting enough, too. i have tried to offer her during the day when she isn't going ot nap, but she just refuses!

My DS was like your DD around the same age; the world just seemed too interesting at the time and there was skills to be learned!

I always offered the breast after DS woke up, especially if he was still sleepy and most of the time he would have a short feed. Some times he had a longer feed but I always offered. At 13 months I was still offering a breastfeed before breakfast and lunch to ensure he got his big morning wake up feed.

This changed again as he got older; at 23 months he is back to around 6 feeds a day and one overnight.

They do tend to drop a few feeds once they are over 1 and eating more efficiently.

My bub is 2 but still only feeds to sleep (now at one day sleep) and when she wakes through the night (heaps ) The only other time is if she is very upset or has hurt herself she wants a comfort feed.

Sounds pretty 'normal' for her age.

16 month old dd does this too & has since about 12 months or so. She makes up for lack of milk during the day overnight.

UmmInayah, I just replied to another post in the general section along the same lines as this.
My DD is 12mths & has dropped down to 2 feeds a day for the last month & the only time she will take these 2 feeds is once during the night & once first thing in the morning.
I offer it numerous times during the day & she completely refuses.
Now just this week, she will take the feed during the night when she wakes, but is refusing the feed first thing in the morning.
She drinks heaps of water throughout the day (which is the only other liquid she drinks other than BM), so I am not worried about dehydration. But I am worried about the milk intake. I am making sure she has yoghurt & cheese every day for added calcium. I even offered her a cup of cows milk yesterday for the first time, but she wasn't impressed with it & refused it after 2 sips.
I'm just going to continue offering it when she wakes during the night because 9/10 times she will take it then, so at least I know she is getting 1 feed.

thank you so much for the replies

i was so worried about dd's milk intake that last night i put her in a disposable, just so i could feel how heavy her nappy was. it was SATURATED! so she must be getting loads of milk during the night and that's probably why she doesn't want it so much during the day. (she wakes at least 4 times)

aries7, have you tried a dreamfeed during the night (instead of waiting til she wakes)? might help her get that little extra bit and keep your supply up.

last night, she woke 3 times & took a feed each time, so at least I know she's got her milk quota for today! (she is a real night waker, so I can always be assured of 1-2 feeds a night)

I'm also giving some full cream cows milk mixed in with cereal, muesli or custard.

I'm pretty certain my supply is still going strong. Much to my friends astonishment, I'm still getting let-downs even only feeding once or twice a day.

OP: my DS is a little younger than your DD but generally i offer him a feed when he wakes from all sleeps (night and 2 day sleeps) and also before he goes to sleep and in between if he asks for it. its about 7x a day

Both my babes dropped feeds around this age, from what I know they are learning to walk, investigate things so get distracted, both of mine picked up a few feeds once they reached 15mths, just keep doing what you doing :)
