Hi I am just wondering if anyone has tips hints or something to help me and my DS feed laying down.
He's 4wks old and has slight tongue tie but feeding has been great.
We're feeding what seems to be all day and so I've tried laying down just to have a rest while feeding but DS doesn't like it as I can't get his nose out if my breast and so he pulls off!!! Hungry!!!! Then our patience runs out and I sit up.
I know there are ways of positioning his body or mine to help this but I just can't work it out. So I'm putting this out there for anyone with advise.
Thanks in advance.

I feed lying down every morning, and I find the easist position is with bubs latched to the uppermost breast, and me leaning slightly forward with my topmost arm supported on a pilow so as not to put the extra weight on him.

If I'm feeding him off the lower breast then I remove the pillow and just keep the arm out of his way. It also helps if I lie as straight as I can (not curled up around him) as tat lets him get in the right alignment with his chin and nose.

I only feed bub with the breast closest to the mattress. I make sure that her lower half is tucked in close to me and her head is a little further out so we for a bit of a V. I always make sure that her mouth is level or slightly lower than the nipple so that her chin is up off her chest to help keep her nose clear, but I sometimes need to hold some of my breast back for her. In the early days I had to shape up my nipple for her (because I have big b00bs). I generally have a pillow under my head and I use the lower arm to stop her from rolling on to her back. I really hope you can make it work - we love our lying down feeds.

It took me ages to figure out how to breastfeed lying down, but once you get it, it is great. But both DS and I seem to fall asleep alot while we're doing it!
The way I do it, is lie DS down in the middle of the bed on his back (he get's really excited now every time I do it, and will flap his arms and legs around, very cute!) then I lie down next to him, with my boobs about level with his head. I tuck his arm down beside him then roll him towards me.
Once he is latched on (to the bottom boob), I pull his body closer in to me, which tips his head back and moves his nose away from my boob.
Hope that helps! Practice makes perfect!:D

Yep, this is how I do it, except that I put DS' arm up above his head (the one that is closest to the mattress). You definitely have to practice at it and it gets easier as they get older. It is very cute when you lay them on the bed and they get all excited knowing that it's time for a feed. DS opens his mouth and rolls towards me and makes his "gimme" noises - you have to laugh.

I also sometimes lie on my back on the bed, lie DS on my chest so that we're tummy to tummy with his face level with my breasts and then roll over onto my side with him - he seems to just manouvre himself into the perfect position that way. Might not work while they're really little and don't have head control though...

Keep at it, it's such a nice squishy cuddly way to feed, especially for the first morning feed when you're still waking up.

Thanks heaps for those tips, I think practise is the way to go, I wish I had actually seen someone do it- I mean I've seen photos but I think seeing can help.
We tried today but he just wants to get on and on with it.... We will keep trying, it's great to know that it doesn't just happen easy for everyone and I can't wait to experience it- I find the whole breast feeding thing relaxing and cute..
Thanks heaps ladies and any other stories let us know, it's great support, :-)

All of the above are good suggestions that are worth trying.

If I am feeding from the boob closest to the mattress I find that it is more comfortable to tuck a pillow longways behind my back. This means I can recline slightly - leaning on the pillow - away from bub (makes boob higher and easier for her to attach) but I am still relaxed.

Hope that makes sense. :)

Google video results show HEAPS of clips showing women breastfeeding while lying down.

I only feed like this during the night, it took weeks to figure it out for us too! I used to get soo frustrated and upset I couldn't do it so understand. The way babies bf changes as they get older, they become more aware of your breast and I think that helps them attach and support their own bfeeding
I feed bub with lower boob. And I lay her head on my arm and have her on her side curl into me. I lay her down with boob there for her to attach herself.
At four weeks my dd still needed me to help her attach. So I tried and practiced until we could do it.
But I used to feed while I was on my back. I'd attach her than lay down.

At 4 weeks I found that they can find it hard to lay high enough to be in line with my b00b, so to start off with I use my outer hand (the one off the mattress) to support their heads from behind (if that makes sense), it makes it a little easier to help guide them on. And I use a pillow between my head and arm that is on the mattriess. Once they get bigger and better they will be able to self attach easier.

I love doing night feeds laying down, I doze back off to sleep.

These explainations have been a great help and my DS may have nearly got it sussed out today we're out tomorrow but tonight might be a good 1.
Also those clips are awesome thanks anonnymouse, and thanks to the worldwide language of breastfeeding !!!!
