I was wondering if anyone else has been experiencing aching hips, knees (joints) and ankles (joints) in the night. It has been waking me up every night between 2-4am and it is aching so bad I have to go get the wheat pack which seems to help a little bit. Has anyone else had anything similar? I am 36 weeks pregnant, but have had it for a few weeks. My naturopath thinks that it may be ligament pain....??

Hi,when I was around 19wks pregnant I was told not to lie on my back because of the pressure put on a certain vein that runs thru you(can't remember what it's called)so consequently had aching hips and legs from lying on my side all the time at night,it felt like my hips had been hit by a truck,it ached sooo bad, also felt really numb.
This was a nightly occurance right up until the birth, all I could do was take panadol if it was too bad, though after walking around for a bit it helped get the feeling back.

I know sometimes I can't wait for bub to come because then you can sleep whatever way you want (well when you actually are able to get some sleep! :) ) So maybe it is just the pressure from lying on your side?

I had incredible aches in the hips at night when I was pregnant. I'd wake up in discomfort from being one side and have to roll over to the other side. My ob told me it had to do with fluid - but I can't really remember. I do remember that he told me there wasn't anything I could do about it. One of my girlfriends passed on a sausage-like pillow that she had used while she was pregnant. I used to put it between my knees and it helped a little bit. The good news is that it goes after giving birth.

Hmm, yes actually I'd forgotten about that. I had it too. (I think that sleeping on your side all the time with the extra weight does it)
Heat helps, and the old pillow-between-the-legs trick is good too. I used a boomerang pillow in the second half of my pregnancy and found it was fantastic to snuggle into. (Snuggling into my hubby was impossible... I was huge!) Some nights I slept on the couch too because it was much softer than my bed - we had a futon!!
(We had to ditch the futon at about 7 months! I just couldn't bear it any longer)

Same here, 37 weeks and sleeping on my side hurts and numbs my hips :( i also have resigned myself to sleeping on the lounge as it stops me rolling onto my back and also seems easier to roll out of during the many trips to the loo!I find i dont have to roll over either as with every loo trip i just change ends of the lounge! I also get a numb area under my left breast when i lie on that side?? Pins and needles feeling, its awful.
My ankles, or rather cankles  are aching too from the extra weight load and fluid retention. My feet are huge! No shoes fit! geeeeeeeeeeez but its all good!.......................i think!
I'm 30 weeks and can relate. I find that when I lie on my side, the hip on the bottom is sore. I'd say it's to do with the extra weight and pressure. I've been placing a small cushion under my hip and then one between the legs to relieve the pressure and it seems to help. Feels like I'm in a jumping castle, but whatever works!

By the looks of things the aching hip is pretty common, nice to know it wasn't just me!! But there is a light at the end of the tunnel, once bub comes the pain does go, but there will be new ones to replace them!!!! :p The aching back from lifting, the old creaky knees from bending and kneeling etc etc :D

Seems to be just a pregnancy thing hey!!! I tried the couch the other night in desperation.....I might have to give that another ago and just keep swapping to the different ends as suggested!!I have been going swimming a bit this past week and I am finding that this helps a bit during the night. Thanks for all the advice and tips :p

Yes i have had hip pain, my right hip has been dodgie so to speak since i fell pregnant, i have also had ciontinous siatic pain until only 2 weeks ago. i have found going to a chiropractor/physio/massage therapist i have been able to keep the pain under controll. I am now 23 weeks and few days and now find that I am just uncomfortable and have pelvic pain which i have been told will only continue. I can't stand or walk around for too long and that is more frustrating then the pain. :)
I'm 35 wks and get the hip pain too, in the bottom hip when I'm lying on my side (as you have to).
One thing I have found really helpful is folding a queen size doona in half and sleeping on top of it (so there are two layers below me). With the extra padding my hips hurt much less and I can sleep in bed rather than resorting to the sofa. I then have another doona on top.
Hope it works for you,
Mea.

hi there
obviously you will have had your baby some time ago now, but for anyone else searching this post for tips, i highly recommend taking fish oil. my hips were really painful and keeping me awake in late 2nd/early 3rd trimester and a friend suggested it (people take up to 12 capsules a day for arthritis). i took a double dose on the first couple of days and the pain reduced pretty much instantly. then i went to the usual dose of two or three capsules a day and have had no pain since. in fact the reason i am writing this now instead of snoozing happily is because i haven't been taking them for the last few days and the pain has returned and woken me.
fish oil also contains DHA which is great for you and your baby for a number of reasons. be careful which fish oil you take though because oils made from the liver of the fish contain too much Vitamin A - check with your caregiver or the pregnancy drug helpline before you start downing them by the handful.
some pregnancy vitamin tablets contain DHA or fish oil already but the daily dose might not be high enough to help with this problem.
