hiya,
My husband went over to the middle east in 05. It was very challenging for him for a number of reasons, but also agreat experience.
Cheers
Emma.
Do you mean a souse accompanied posting - like to somewhere like Butterworth in Malaysia (that's the only one I know much about becasue we were a chance to go at once stage until hubby changed trade). Haven't done it but think it would be a great experience.

My DH isnt ADF, but he was sent overseas for two years, and I followed.
Luckily for us he was sent to Malaysia, where 90% of his family live (only his parents are in Aus) and I studied the language at uni, so we got alone fine. My only problem was that I couldn't get a work visa and was very bored until I started volunteer work, and private tutoring (paid in barter).
Although we were near ex-pats I spent most of my time with locals and DHs family.
I had a great time and would 100% go again.
The only downside was my little sister coming to visit and meeting her abusive ex-fiance.
I would recommend researching a country before accepting the posting, and seeing how different things would be for you.
My friend recently got back from PNG there .. a GREAT experience for her, two little girls and her DH. Got a bit dicy just prior to moving back.
Close friends lived in Palau for 3yrs .. governed by US Navy. You have to have a psych test for some places or maybe all. Another friend locally has her DH in Tuvalu and visits every few months with their daughter.
I think due to education and lack there of in some places, families aren't permitted to go. Not really sure on that . but still an overseas posting would be a great experience.

DH and I were just discussing it (well perhaps not just as he has been away for 3 weeks mut YKWIM) adn he is considering a changeover to officer and we were talking about posting options and he said there are some postings in Malasia, the US and also in the UK - would certainly be interesting but as PP said possibly not a great option for families with school aged kids!
