 Hi everyone, this is a great site! i really need some advice, im 24 years old and have been in and out of hospital for 3 years with really really bad pains in my right overy, i have every kind of scan, operation, test you can think of, last year they eventually after another operation told me that i had polycystic overies, then told me to go home that was it, i got taken back in agin in march of this year with terrible pains and again they confirmed what i already knew but yet that was it. The doctor told me that polycystic overies are not the cause of my pain as they dont cause pain so i asked him what the hell is the cause of my painand i got no answer. since then i went to the hospital last week for a check up and broke down crying i told the doctor i have had enough i have put up these pains coming and going all the time and that sometimes the pain is so bad i just want it out i cant take it anymore, i have now got alot of excess hair as well which i have no idea what to do about, can you get medication for this??
After crying to the doctor at the hospital she has now wrote to my gp advising him to book me another scan, please can someone tell me if my symptoms sound about right because ive been trying to deal with this on my own for years i just want some help!!!
Thanks guys

Hi,
Is the dr you have been seeing an Ob? I had immense troubles before getting preg with my DS. I had 2m/c's and they left some of the 1st one behind. Which caused me a great deal of physical and emotional pain. It wasnt until i saw an Obsetrician (sp?) that he got all cleared up with yet another D&C.
Otherwise i would go and see a naturopath. My friend is one and she reckons that dr's mask the symptoms with drugs, but that there is an underlying problem which can usually be fixed.
I dont really know what else to tell you in regards to your symptoms, sometimes you have to be forceful towards them to get your point across.
Anyway
Goodluck.
Cheers

Hiya
i have only ever seen my Gp and a gynecologist in hospital, the Doctors should be referring me back to the gyne unit to have a scan AGAIN soon but i think your right they just keep fobbing me off, i did have 2 2cm cysts in 2001 which were drained and have had problems ever since. i get the pains on and off alot im sitting here now with them, i just seems no one will help me which i find quite strange as they can see this is getting me down and that i cant cope with the pains any longer.

I had similar pains on my right side that truly baffled the Drs. I had a laproscopy to check to see if it was endometriosis or polycystic ovaries but it wasn't. I also had a D&C to see if there were problems with my uterus. 3 weeks after having that operation and being told that all this pain was in my head, I ended up back on the operating table having my appendix out. I had what you'd call an irritable appendix. It'd flare then go back to normal, then flare again but eventually it would rupture. Mine was on the verge of rupturing. Your appendix is found around the same area. Maybe you should get your blood tested as your white blood cell count can be up with an irritable appendix.

I was bleeding into an ovarian cyst which was about the size of an orange. It was on my right.
The differential diagnosis was either a) an ovarian cycst or b) a retro-cecal appendix.
An ultrasound showed an ovarian cyst, and it was surgically removed, along with my appendix in the same procedure. The logic was if I ever developed the same symptoms again, the appendix was automatically ruled out. Just as well, as I developed another cyst with worse pain than the first, and was able to have it promptly drained during an ultrasound procedure, which beats being unzipped any day.
I'd discuss the possibility of an appendix problem with your GP. My brother had a shocking bout of appendicitis, they sent him home from emergency saying it was an upset stomach, only to have it rupture 24 hours later on the table when they were about to remove it. My teenage daughteralso had appendix problems that would come and go over a couple of years, starting when she was 11. They finally removed it when she was 13.

Hey Jolene, you poor thing, doctors have no right to treat you like this and leave you not knowing what is going on! The other ladies are obviously right in checking out the appendix, and I think they would have a duty of care if that is a possibility (and as long as you have one, it is). If you do have polycystic ovaries (PCOS), that would probably be a boon to you rather than something bad, as at least it is treatable!
In answer to your question, sometimes PCOS can result in additional hair growth as testosterone levels can rise. The pain can be almost unbearable, making even standing up straight impossible, and coughing scary enough to make you break into a cold sweat. BUT if it is that, as I said TREATABLE :)
I have been on medication to help stop the cysts forming in the first place and you wouldn't believe the difference! I rarely ever have pain anymore as I don't have many periods (thanks to the right "pill" for me as well) and I feel so much better. I don't have excess hair, as I have a different form, but a friend who did found it went away with her treatment.
The treatment doesn't just stop the symptoms luckily, it actually helps your body to regulate the insulin in your blood stream, therefore dramatically fewer and smaller cysts! This has been great comfort to me, as continued (and I mean majorly long term, not just a few years) disruption to the tissue there can concievably cause nasty damage.
Sorry to overload you with information, just want you to know that if it is PCOS, don't worry, tons of women have it and it is totally manageable ;)

I must have posted at the same time as you Jolene! Oh well, no appendix is a good thing in these circumstances, as you don't need to worry about a rupture!

Hey Jolene, glad to hear you are feeling more positive about it all :D
I am sure it differs, but I am on something called "Metformin" (brand name "Diaformin") and it is a drug originally made for diabetics, so if your doc says "it is for diabetes" don't freak out. In saying that, I am not sure that it is something that would be prescribed for you, it is taking off as a treatment, and lots of success in my knowledge, but I am only going really by my own experiences. Best advice from me: If your doc wont listen, change docs.
And chin high, it is YOUR body, you know you need help, a Doc only there to help YOU, in whatever way ends up being best.

I'm with Kelbel on this one - after years and years (about 8) of doctor /gyno misdiagnosing (I had endometriosis with many cysts bursting over the years) I found out about a Naturopath that specialises in Fertility problems and I can tell you that it was the first time I felt comfortable with diagnosis and treatment.
Naturopath's have a holistic approach (they check your whole body / diet / lifestyle) and aside from feeling the healthiest I have ever felt, I no longer get the common cold regularly. After 5 years of trying to fall pregnant (including two attempts at IVF) we fell pregnant naturally and now have two healthy boys 15months apart.
It may not be for everyone, but its worth a try if you are having no luck with conventional medicine. GOODLUCK!

Jolene, are you sure you want to do that?? Sounds like modern medicine hasn't done you any favours so far, you poor thing! I think Peaceangels suggestion to perhaps try a naturopath is a great one, and for something even more 'alternative' I know a woman who has medical training but also does energetic healing and she is often able to tell what is going on (AND help you fix it) intuitively (ie. she's psychic). Have a look at her website here: www.fractology.info. It looks a bit complex, so perhaps go straight to the testimonials page to see her results!
OH...and as a bonus, her specialty is helping women to become pregnant so it's right up your alley!!!
Good luck Jolene. But I really hope you take some time to think about what alternatives might be out there before you subject yourself to the knife. :o
