I am so annoyed!!!!!!!!!!
Poor DS has to get another jab in the next month because the nurse who gave his 6mth vaccines gave him Quadracel (3 in 1) instead of Infanrix (5 in 1) even though it was clearly written in his child health book that the 2mth and 4mth vaccines were Infanrix NOT Quadracel. I only realised this when I got DS immunisation history statement and it says that he is still due for Hib from a month ago (checked the health book and realised nurse wrote a number only down not the name of vaccine, naughty!).
I rang the medical centre and spoke to the nurse who preceeded to tell me that DS doesn't need Hib and that Infanrix doesn't include it. I told her that as far as I have been told, it does. She then told me DS doesn't need Hib (even though Health book clearly states that it should be included in the 6mth vaccine) Then she said that DS probably never was covered, that 2 other doctors were wrong.
So I rang the number on the immunisation schedule and they said he has 1mth to get Hib booster before he isn't covered by last injection and Infanrix definately does cover Hib.
I am really angry, not only because my precious little angel has to go through that all again so soon, but because this woman obviously is giving out outdated information and probably causing children to not be sufficiently covered. If I didn't want my child immunised then I wouldn't have put him through all the previous jabs.
I am now looking for another place to take DS as I am really unhappy with this nurse. We have jsut moved to Brisbane from Sydney (I prefer when the doctor does the shots as then at least you know who is doing it, it seems up here that doctors don't do the jab, a nurse does) and this was DS first visit to a medical centre since we moved here. I just picked the closest to home as I had nothing else to go on. If anyone knows of a descent place to go for immunisation in Eastern Brisbane/Redland Shire (Capalaba, Birkdale, Wellington Point or surrounds) then please PM me.
Sorry for the long post but this has really upset me, because they should keep up to date - it is their job!!!!!

I am on the Northside, but I have used the council immunisation clinics rather than the doctor. These are nurses, but they have to do extra training and sit exams. They are up to date on it because they do it all the time.

:hugs: sorry about the silly nurse.
i would be peeved too. immunisations can be stressful enough for parents and children without someone making a mistake.

Im on the Sunshine coast and I used to work in a Drs sugery giving the jabs to the babies:(
The thing with the immunisation shedule is that it changes all the time!! I only quit my job 12 mths ago and it has changed so much, I don know what my DD is up for for her next lot. She should attend information days that the Gov holds to inform nurses of the changes.
As for Drs giving jabs, I would much prefer a nurse to give the jabs as nurses do it all day every day, Drs dont and they are not to expericenced at it. My worst jabs have been from Drs
If you want to travel to the Sunny coast for jabs, I know a GREAT surgery up here where the nurses are FANTASTIC!!! PM me if you want the name

Thanks 3KIDSMUM but I think Sunshine Coast is a little too far away with my bomb of a car, also not having a go at nurses, rather just this one in particular.
I realise that theses things change all th time but don't understand why DS was given a different vaccine this time to the last one.
By the way I must say that the Infanrix is called Infanrix Hexa (5 in 1 sorry if caused any confusion).
I will have to find out where my council immunisation clinic is, I didn't know there were such things up here (don't have them in Syd, just go to the doctors).
I went back to the Dr's today for me and while I was there wanted to clarify things with the nurse. She (after telling me I didn't know what I was talking about) admitted that she didn't know there was a 5 in 1 vaccine. She still gives 3 needles when it can be done in 2. DS had a 5in1 in Feb and was I told about it last year whilst preg so this nurse is pretty out of date. The final word on it was she said she doesn't know how things get done in NSW but this is how they do it in QLD.
I even showed her the immunisation schedule that I got sent that says DS is overdue for Hep B/Hib shot and she said they are wrong, he doesn't need it.
I just feel that if the national immunisation register which is provided by the Aust Govt through Medicare say he is not covered by the shot he was given then cances are, he isn't.
Anyway :ecomcity:
Sorry again for the long post.
The moral of the story is, ask what vaccine your child is being given and which things they cover, get them to write it down for you so you know.

Well, well, well. I just got a call from the medical centre nurse (different nurse) who was ringing to let me know that the immunisation register people just rang them to find out why DS had not been given Hep B/Hib shot. He is now OVERDUE! She didn't know why this had happened but is now ringing the register people to find out exactly which booster to give so they don't make another mistake.

Sooooo Angry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is it that everyone treats first time mums as complete idiots?

Why is it that everyone treats first time mums as complete idiots?

i ask myself that alot lol i rang my local council immunisation place and explained how i was unsure of if DS shoudl be exempt from the chickenpox vax or not the nurse i spoke to had no idea waht i was on about  she hadnt heard of certain medications stopping people from having certain needles.she sounded really old too. most of the people there are young so i think i know which one i spoke to is lol

i am glad the centre got in touch with you :D at least they knwo they stuffed up.

I think the immunisation register is a fantastic thing. They keep a check on what your kids have had and what they should have if they have missed something. Makes you wonder how many kids haven't been immunised properly, or only half immunised. Anyway if you haven't received a statement from the immunisation register about your child's immunisation (just got DS's at 7mths) give them a call and find out if your kids are listed or how to get listed.
Their contact number is 1800 653 809 or go to www.medicareaustralia.gov.au (http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au)

aijent that is absolutely disgraceful!!! That person should be held accountable for that, it was lucky that it was only sterile water that they used - but could there be side affects from that?

I can't believe they could make a 'mistake' like that. I am so very angry about all of this. At least they told your SIL otherwise they could have 'overlooked' it and just kept doing what they were doing. I wonder who is meant to regulate these things. They should be held accountable for these stuff ups!!!
