View Full Version : E-mail for children
My 10 yr old wants her own e-mail address. Both hubby and I are wary of giving her unfettered access to the internet. Does any one have any suggestions of ways to introduce to the internet safely, are their any e-mail address sites that are for children and therefore protected. I know we have to let her learn about this part of her world and want to make it a positive experience but don't want to see her bullied or exposed to inappropriate information. I'm sure we're over reacting but would be grateful for any advice from those that have gone before us.

Usually the only way spam and the likes come in to an email address is because its been used on a site and taken from there. My nephew has a hotmail account and has never gotten any spam. He's also been told to be very choosy about who he gives his address to and its mainly only family and a couple of really close friends that have it. Also my sister will sometimes check things before he gets online.

I agree with the PP. Hotmail is good.
Maybe tell them you will know the password too. 10 is young. But not to young. I think that it can be policed very well. Unless you give someone the address then they arn't going to know to send you things.
And with hotmail you can use that account address for messenger. (msn)
So you will have to be aware that they could be talking real time to anyone.

Hi I am a teacher and there is a website www.superclubsplus.com.au where children can use email to other registered children. It has moderators 24 hrs a day and things like addresses and stuff are not be advertised or sent. It is a program we use in school and students can access it at home (they love it)
might be worth looking into or u might find your school is already using it.
I wouldn't recommend facebook or myspace but if not set up a hotmail account and monitor very closely - there are many predators out there!
Thanks for you advice I wll definately look into the superclub plus website it sounds like a great idea. Wish me luck, my baby's growing up!
