hi all,

Im hoping to be pregnant in the next year and want to have a c-section. I havent got private insurance and dont particularly want it, but from what i can gather i wont be able to or will have a lot of difficulty getting a c-section in a public hospital.
So, i will only want the most basic cover. I can do all the anti natal stuff through the public, thats not an issue. I basically only want the c-section covered.
I will appreciate any advice from you ladies, it is all so new to me..:o

I don't know about c-sections and private health insurance but if you do take out private cover, be aware that there is usually a 12 month waiting period for pregnancy related costs. Something to think about when you are trying to conceive.

If you don't want to have to fight to get the csection you want you're right, private cover is a good idea.

I think you'll find though that you'll have to do every thing private, including while you're pregnant. Don't think you can use the public antenatal clinic if you're delivering private. You might want to check.

Basically you should take out hospital cover only but make sure you're covered for obstetrics. Also not a bad idea to have neonatal intensive care in case bub needs that or special care nursery as this can run into literally tens of thousands without it. Have a look at HCF, they cover you for this with their Top Hospital cover. Also there is a waiting period of nine months for obstetrics with them.

I think you mihgt need the private health cover if you want to have an elective c-section. Thats my understanding anyway because i think the public system will only use u a c section if absolutely necessary. Just make sure your cover also includes all the theatre fees and an anaesthetist. You can cheat and get public hospital cover with all the extras , and then just before you give birth change it to private hospital if your fund has a short waiting period.

I had my bub in May via c-section in a private hospital. you will need to be on a family plan for 12 months to be covered for baby and you. but you will be covered under a single plan. anti natal is covered by private health. private is good as you get your dr all though pregnancy and birth and hospital of your choice. My hubby's x went through public with his 3 boys and wanted me to do same. but i wanted the same doctor that did my last 3 surgeries. Now he is so happy that we went private and the service that we had.
good luck with your decision.

hi girls,

Thanks so much for your replys, i really appreciate it.
I have just a few more questions......About the 12 month waiting period for private health insurance, is that 12 months before you concieve or 12 months before you use the service?
As i have said before, i just want to use the health insurance for the c-section and for additional after care for me and baby should we need it.
I would be very grateful for a rough estimate of cost for this.
Thanks in advance xx

Hi Peaches,

You usually only have to be in fund for 12 months before the birth, so you could start TTC after 3/4 months of coverage.

To give you a cost estimate, we have family cover and it is $160 p.m, so for single cover it may be around $80 ish. Our cover also includes a lot of extras (eg optical etc) that you may not want, so this could bring your cost down.

A good website to look at is iselect, you put in what you want and it searches the best cover for you.

Good luck. :)

Hi Peaches

We have hospital cover no extras for a family its about 120 per month i think. On the other hand i had my daughter 2 yrs ago in a public hospital as a public patient by c-section and i wasnt for any medical reasons it was elective so i just tought id let you know that anyway. Good luck
