ds had his 1st day at a new daycare today and when i went to pick him up with DP we were asked if ds was prone to nose bleeds:confused: and they told us that ds was sitting by himself reading a book when his nose started to bleed. and it only happened once.
should i worry? its seems to be pretty wierd to just get a nose bleed for no reason.

Hi, I wouldn't worry too much at the moment :fingerscrossed:

My DS suffers from regular nose bleeds particularly in the warmer months. I freaked out when my DS nose started bleeding in the middle of the night and then a few more nights within that same week. I took him to the doctor and they said it is a common thing for some children and just to keep note of how many times he bleeds and approx how much blood is lost etc.. They said it is most commonly associated with an exposed blood vessel and if it becomes a huge problem they will need to have the blood vessel cauterized. It's pretty bad when it happens in the middle of the night and you need to tend to them, then strip the bed/ pillow etc.. and remake it.

The best thing to do if your son begins to have regular nose bleeds is to put a little bit of vasseline into his nostrels to lubricate and protect the blood vessels ;)

thanks :)
the child care worker who told us about DS's nose bleed said it wasnt very much blood.but it had got on to his jacket so they washed it :D
would saline drops also work or does vaseline only work?

Not sure about saline for nose bleeds? If it does become a regular thing, just take him to the doc for a checkup ;)

i read on a few sites that it could be caused by the dry air, allergies, the vessel thing you mentioned and a blood problem.
i hope it isnt a regular occurance lol i thought saline drops might help keep the nostrils from drying up :D lol

Yep, that's right dry air can trigger the nose bleed, when the air hits the blood vessel it cracks and bleeds. I hope your DS doesn't experience this as it isn't very nice to go through. I'm just glad my DS hasn't had them for a while - due to cooler weather and :fingerscrossed: for summer coming up again. Saline may well help, but I just use vaseline ;)

well when i picked up ds from daycare he had another blood nose. the gp checked him out and said it most likely from his cold and the air,so nothing to worry about.
