If you have internet at home look into VoIP type home connection. I am with a company called engin, $15 per month only, free national and local calls. But I don't ring mobiles from my home phone. google them  $40 for very fast broadband through optus, so all up never more than $55 per month.

Home Phone - $29.95 p/month Telstra
Internet ADSL2 - $29.95 p/month TPG (12GB - 4GB Peak/8GB Non Peak)
We had our internet with Telstra but it was just too much  We had wireless and were paying $44.95 a month for 1GB!!!!!!!
So now we pay $60 a month for phone and internet and get way more GB's  and TPG don't charge you more if you go over your usage, they just slow the speed right down.

I pay around $60/month for mine, and have found that paying $15/week is enough. That's for the phone and internet. I found Telstra too expensive, but have my mobile with them. I use the phone heaps because most of my friends and family aren't local. The joys of going to school at a boarding school hey, those I still keep in touch with are from far-reaching places. Thankfully there's FB for the ones who live in a completely different country because I'm not calling them lol.
OMG I feel for you not having optus. I was with telstra until I moved and save sooo much money.
We are on the $99 month plan. We get 20GB downloads  plus unlimited calls to any mobile phone in Australia (apart from satellite phones), all local calls, any long distance calls and any 13 or 1300 numbers - all included in the $99

My home/internet/foxtel are all packaged together on Telstras new Home Entertainment Bundle.
We pay $198 for unlimited local calls, $1 STD calls, 25GB internet downloads then slowed (its ADSL2+) and have foxtel platinum package.
If you to get free STD calls teh package is $218

Our bill comes to about 110 a month, which includes about 40 of foxtel, and we are with telstra. Trying to decide whether to get rid of the home phone though because I have left it unplugged for a month Now and haven't plugged it back in. Was trying to work out though if it will work out cheaper because I will still need a phone line.

Can you tell me exactly what you are gettin for that money - what are your call rates like etc etc - what sort of internet do you have.

If you have to have a Telstra land line you should look into Exetel for the call rates.
They are meant to be quite cheap but you have to have your phone through Telstra to use them, their internet rate is pretty cheap too.
As for me I am with Vodaphone on the mobile and spend 49 a month and I am with Virgen net and I get 6gig for $40 a month.

What company are you with??
We have wireless prepaid broadband with Dodo and it costs us $40 a month.
We got rid of our home phone when we realised that the only people who called were telemarketers and wrong numbers. We now use Skype for our overseas calls and we use the calls included in our mobile phone plans for everything else.

we pay $129 a month with optus, we get 20GB adsl2 and then slowed when we reach our limit (make sure ur plan does that because we were with telstra before and our plan didnt and we some how downloaded over 90GB and get a bill for $1400, didnt have to pay because it wasnot specified in our contract ).
we also get unlimited local and national phone calls and also unlimited calls to mobile phones from any network, which is great because i dont have to worry about who im calling or for how long. only bad thing was we had to sign up for 24months
works for us because im always talking atleast 5x a day.
I scrapped my home phone too....
Just mobile - Iphone cap plan w unlimited text and huge call cap, along with 750MB net use ($70/mth) and usb broadband ($40/mth) bundled with Optus here.....

i used to work for telstra wholesale.
what is the reasoning you cannot carry over to optus? i think telstra/optus make people believe that because they are on telstra infrastructure, it means that they cannot migrate to optus which is total bs.
talk to an optus rep. they can and SHOULD be able to lease telstra infrastructure and provide you with their services.
i would be very interested to know how you came to realise that you could not go to optus??
also if you're currently on an adsl plan with telstra, optus CAN provide you with adsl as well. it's just a matter of them churning over from telstra.

we pay about $200 per month for home phone/internet/foxtel. We pay this at $50 p/w and never have any left over to pay.
The mobiles (2, DH and mine) is just over $200 and we pay that at $65 per week.

I did talk to a rep from optus and they basicall said that they lease phone lines from telstra (or something like that) and that I would have to wait until someone in my area cancels with optus and goes to another company - they put me on a waiting list.
If that sounds like BS tell me so I can call them again.
I currently have telstra wireless (as I was living all over the place for while.

wtf?? that is TOTAL BS! leasing a certain number of lines is crap especially if he is talking only phone lines!. unless he was talking about adsl? in which case, there may not be available infrastructure in the exchange and yes, you will have to wait for free ports.. but if you do enough complaining, they will find one for you ;)
i would definitely talk to someone else. i know with telecommunications companies, they speak out of their **** a lot so i would definitely ask to speak to someone higher if they don't give you any reprieve.
ALSO call telstra and ask them exactly what products they have listed on your line. sometimes they have bigpond products on your line that are inactive, and this makes other telecommunication companies believe that tehy cannot put their services on because you already have an adsl service with telstra.

Home Phone - $20.95 p/mth line rental
Internet - $59.95 80GB (40GB Peak/40GB Off-Peak)
We don't use the home phone only our mobiles which have $120 caps each so its always $20.95 per mth, simply have it for ADSL, can't get Naked DSL where we are (on a RIM) otherwise we'd get rid of the phoneline.

I am with dodo (who are a 3rd party carrier so they use either optus or telstra, whoever hasd best service in your area)
I pay 29.90 for the net and that is a whopping 105Gb :eek: data per month (coz we were thinking about using VOIP which uses some Gb)
And 24.90 for phone
and 29.90 for mobile which incluses $320 credit to use on anything and optus to optus/boost/dodo each night for free.
Here we cant get optus either so our actual provider is telstra, but i pay dodo :D
They have some awesome deals, some not listed on the net, so call them and haggle them a bit to get what you want.

We have telstra for our home phone which we hardly use so its a bout 30.00. We have our internet with tpg 120gb for $49 and our mobiles is with tpg which is 14.99 each which gives you $300 worth of calls so we use our mobiles more to use up our cap.
We are thinking of going naked adsl which means we can get rid of home phone and get voip.

Voice over Internet Protocol (ie phone via the internet).
Yes, it's much cheaper.
