im not a breastfeeder but thought id put this in the BF section as id probably get more help...
DS has just turned 1 and has been fully FF since he was 8 days old... the thing is... milk STILL comes out everytime i touch my nipples  is this normal, why is this??
and before you ask why i didnt feed him my milk with such a good supply, is because i cant due to the medication im on (which sucks as i really REALLY wanted to BF him) but anyway, does anyone know why im like this & will it continue to be like this for ever??
TIA from the nipple leaking freak

ETA just realised i didnt even put it in the BF section LOL!

Have moved to the BF section for you :)

Have you actively tried to dry up your supply?

Is it both sides or just one side. One side would really concern me but either way I'd get checked out by a doctor. Maybe an ultrasound. I know it's been going on for a year but even so, nipple discharge is a concerning feature for something going on inside the breast, or a hormonal upset that would need to be investigated (pituitary gland). I think these are all unlikely but if it were me I'd want them ruled out!

3-4 a day... then juice & all that bad stuff :o

EmyN oh no now im freaking out :crying:
both sides do it... one a bit more than the other, but that side was the one with the better supply when i did express originally (expressed for 8 days, then swapped to FF)

I wouldn't stress. Once your milk ducts have learned how to make milk, they never really stop. My mum can still express a little bit of colostrum - my youngest sibling is 24 years old!

Women can start lactating when they've already stopped (ie relactation, or lactation for an adopted baby, etc). I probably wouldn't be worried about it, especially since it's been going on since you had your bub. If it was something out of the blue (and you weren't pregnant, or actively trying to induce lactation, THEN I'd be worried), but it's always a good idea to get things that concern you checked out by a doctor.

I also think it's worth mentioning that one breast ALWAYS makes more milk than the other. So the fact that you can get more from one side than the other doesn't necessarily mean anything at all.

Also, are you aware that touching your breasts/expressing milk will mean that your breasts are being given the message that they have to make more? Making milk is a supply/demand thing. Your breasts will always make a little more than has been taken to replace what's gone, so it's possible that if you're expressing a little everytime you get into the shower to see if it's still happening, for example, you're actually increasing your milk supply without being aware of doing so. The best thing is to leave them alone, completely. The milk will eventually 'dry up' (but will never really be 100% gone).

A LC told me the other day you can re-establish you supply years and years after weaning, like tam said, her mum still has milk 24 years later! I wouldn't worry at all :)

:footinmouth: Sorry I didn't mean to freak you out!! And I am not hugely knowledgeable about BF etc. Like I said, it's probably not any of those things but I'm a huge worry-wart so just saying that personally I would want it checked out. :o

What she said. I was hoping someone like Tam would come in and tell you this, it is exactly what I would have said.

Heck, women who have never been pregnant or lactated can produce milk (like women who adopt who really want to breastfeed). Not sure what the term for it is but the ABA website has something on it. Anyway, that's very off topic.

I have a friend who like you formula fed, but can still get milk out now and she's in her 60's.
Funny thing is that when she went for her mamogram a fair few yrs ago milk came out. The tech asked how old her baby was... "she's 25" lol

Unfortunately it is just one of those things like others have said, I BF for 3 months and DD is 7 next month and I still leak, often after hot showers these days that I notice it the most and VERY frustrating.

I only realised 2 years ago I was still producing and completely freaked out, went to the doctor straight away and he explained everything to me as PP have.

Ahh the joys of being a mummy
