Hi all....

DD is 4 months old but I am already thinking about how she will go on solids (we are doing BLW)....

I have an intolerence to cows milk (mainly to drink and in concentrated forms such as yoghurt, cheese, ice cream etc) which got worse in pregnancy.... I re introduced it a little while b/f, but DD got unsettled so I stopped.... ( also think I am intolerent to soy milk too...... I drink rice milk and use that in everything)

She is now on formula (Bellamy's - loads of BF issues......) and I am wondering if I should be careful in introducing items that contain cows milk to her...... I now formula is derived from cows milk, but could it be possible that she might just have an intolerence like me????

sorry for rambling...... did i get my point across???

I myself have an intolerance as do my kids. My DD2 was on formula for a while, no dramas (the proteins change in the drying process so she was ok with it) but she cant have cows milk, causes her massive impaction and constipation.

It is usually a case of trial and error, we went to GP after GP for her constipation and finally after heaps of doctors, the Pead said to stop all dairy and see how we went, well it worked. She is now 7 and can tolerate small amounts (lik ein cakes, or maybe one small tub of yogo, or a scoop of ice cream) but she still cant have a glass of milk or she gets constipated.

I am opposite to her, i get the runs and the worse cramps in my tummy for hours and hours after milk, i have a tiny dash in my coffee and can handle a small tub of yougurt or a bit of grated cheese on my sandwich, but thats it.

My son simply vomits. No bowel issues!

Sometimes children do grow out of it over time, others get worse. I never had a problem as a child, but with each pregnancy i seem to get worse.

See if you can get a referal to a Pead. And chat to them about it. There is all sorts of dairy intolerances, it can be the proteins or the caseins ( i think thats what it is )

My friend uses tablets from the chemist for her sons, they take the tablet then are ok with dairy, i have no idea what they are called.

what about goats milk for your self ? or do u react to lactose free milk ?

i developed a dairy or lactouse intolorence with my last bub , no one could tell me why it started :( sadly still get it mildly.
I would keep dairy away from bubs as long as u can or if u do make sure its very low dairy.
U can get goats milk in formula too , never tried it but its there.

Hi There,

Sounds like you are Cows Milk Protein Intolerant (CMPI) or Milk/Soy Protein Intolerant (MSPI), a common combination. My son is CMPI and is also intolerant to Soy. It is when you are Intolerant to the Proteins (cassein and whey) in dairy and soy. I am not CMPI so had to cut out dairy and soy whilst breastfeeding, as he had mucousy pooh, vomitting, diarrhea and eventually blood in his BM due to the allergic colitis he developed, these proteins do cross through your breastmilk which is probably why DD reacted badly. However as she is tolerating the Formula now I'm not sure, unless as PP suggested during the making of the formula the proteins are partially hydrolysed and broken down and your DD has a only a mild Intolerance and can tolerate small amounts of these proteins....... When I tried DS on formula within half hr he was passing lots of wind, vomitting (not uncommon as he suffers from Reflux), had diarrhea, devellopped a rash and a temp...

If she is tolerating the formula I would maybe try a small amt first, I guess the only way to know is to introduce dairy very slowly, yoghurt is usually a good start as during the culturing the proteins are broken down, and if she has a reaction stop. You may need to try find her 'threshold', but that would take a bit of trial and error so may need to be saved until she is older.

If she is not tolerating the formula well there is as PP suggested Soy and Goat Formula, however alot of people who are CMPI are also intolerant to the proteins in Soy and also Goat, as Goat Milk Proteins are very similar to Cow Milk Proteins, also people who do tolerate Goat intitially can become 'sensitised' to the proteins and develop an intolerance or a more severe intolerance over time.

If these don't work there is prescription formula such as Pepti Jnr, Neocate and Elecare that can be trialled.

I have also heard that many people mith a mild intolerance can drink UHT milk with no problems due to the heating process as that also kills off the proteins to an extent.
