Hi There,

My son who is almost 5 months old has severe reflux. He is on omeprazole 5mg/ml only 1 ml daily. At the moment he is bringing up lots and lots of mucous & choking episodes. Last week he ended up in hospital as some of the milk/mucous ended up on his chest and James ended up back in hospital. The peadiatrician is thinking about sending James to dysphagia/swallowing clinic at Westmead Childrens Hospital. I was going to James to a specialist speech pathologist that knows all about feeding/reflux issues and the Syndrome that he has.

What do you think? How do you cope with reflux severe.

Hi Kim,

:hugs: Sorry to hear you are still having a difficult time.

I think both those options sound like great ones considering the circumstances... after all what have you got to lose?? Perhaps you could also ask for a refferal to a Gastro Pead at Westmead also??.... IMO for severe GORD or Reflux 5mg of Omperazole per day is a VERY conservative dose... has your pead discussed reviewing your sons dosage? or is that an option... Or maybe using in combination with Zantac also my help?.. Have you tried giving him the (non-generic) Losec Tablets dissolved in water in a syringe instead of using the suspension, I know many people who find the Losec (omperazole) to be much much more effective this way... Or perhaps even changing reflux medication altogether, personally I found my son responded better to Nexium (esomeprazole) .

Is your Pead from the Central Coast? Personally I have had little success with Pead's in the Central Coast area... and I have found they have little knowledge of severe GORD...

For us coping with the reflux meant firstly getting the meds working and cuttiing out the things he was not tolerating through my breastmilk like Dairy, Wheat, Soy...
Is your son NG fed, I think I read in a previous post he was? Is he one Neocate or Elecare?...

All the best, PM me if you need to talk.

Hey

What is the syndrome your DS has ??

With the reflux there is alot of room to move on that losec dose so i would be talkng to the drs about that if I was you. there are also other meds that can help with the motilty so the tummy empties qucker.

I know what servere reflux is like it is horrble, my DD has had antireflux surgery and that still didnt work, she s now fed into her bowel and has a drain from her tummy 24 hours a day and she stil refluxes thankfuly not as much as before the drain.

My 3 mth old is on 20mg of omeprazole,10mg in am and pm. You definitely need a bigger dose. Also how are you feeding him? Lots of reflux bubs are cows milk intolerant. So if your are BF, you need to cut out all dairy and usually soy as well.
Good luck
