Just wandering if anyone knows how this works and how to work out if you have to pay it????? Last year we did DF tax ourselves and we did not have to pay any of it, he earnt $36,000. This year we went to ITP and the guy had to take off 658.80 for the Medicare Levy and he earnt $44,000. Just wandering how it works......

I thought the medicare levy kicked in after you earnt $50K as a single or $100K as a couple, and then it's figured out as a percentage of your income.

I think the ATO site has a link where you can enter your financial details and it will calculate your exemption or how much you have to pay.
got www.ato.gov.au (http://www.ato.gov.au) and you can read the exact terms and conditions of working out the percentage, i just did my MIL tax on e-tax and she earnt 54K and had to pay $260.00 for the medicare levy so I'm not quite sure of the percentage but it has all the info on the ato website. If it is wrong you can do an ammendment but if it was done through ITP they generally know what they are doing.

We had to pay about $760 this year and DH only earnt $52000. It must work on how many people are in your family too.

It's about the same for us which really sucks as we now owe the ATO money.
I thought if you had health ins it brought it down?

you need to distinguish between the ordinary levy (1%) and the EXTRA levy (+0.5%)
Everyone has to pay the ordinary one (with some really really trivial exceptions - can't remember what they were).
You have to pay the extra if you're over 50k (single) or 100k (as a couple) and no insurance
