For my daughters birthday I did the first birthday theme, lost of number 1 balloons and pink and white
But I had a pink and while color setting.
So pink and white plastic table cloths, cups, knives forks, plates, napkins.
I also hired a jumping castle.
I did treasure hunts
pass the parcel
had a craft table where the kids could make their own party hats
I brought 2 10liter waters and left one as water and put cordial in the other, I had cans of drinks for the older kids.
Food
Party pies and sausages rolls
Nuggets
Grandma made devon and put mash in the center and rolled it up then tooth picked it
I made wraps and cut them in half
sandwiches
I made potato bake
pasta salad
garden salad
plain rolls
fairy bread
had a lolly table full of stuff
Made a tun of cupcakes and left some un-iced for the kids to ice their own
I made a butterfly cake
I will add more as I think of it

It will depend on the size of the party too,
For DD we did a ladybug theme so a LB cake, and lolly bags - which had a colouring book and a couple of jelly lollies and a freddo - we only had 4 kids there and all the others were older.
I did fairy bread and cheerios (little boys or whatever you call them) plus some lollies and sausage rolls and I think that was about it - as I said very small party the only family there was my mum, DH and I plus 2 friends and their DH's and kids.
For DS I am having a monkey theme I have made some invites and will do a monkey cake but his party will be the same very small just a few friends no Family as they are all interstate. Though if you google monkey party there is a lady who went ALL OUT they had monkey masks, lolly cups, cake, they got to stuff monkey toys and take them home and heaps more it was amazing - A little OTT for a 1st bday I think unless you have lots of older kids who will appreciate it.
For DD's 2nd B'day I sent the invites out on a pack of sunflower seeds (attached a velum sheet with the details) then the "lolly bag" was a personalised plastic pot with a couple of chuppa chups and Freddos.
Hope you have a ball planning the party

Thanks heaps!!! they are great ideas!!! I like the lady bug idea...its so cute and ive seen little ladybug costumes around for my DD to wear...that would be oh so cute!!! The party will be close friends and family so not too many guests and the children will range from 1 month (not that he will even know whats going on) to 7...so i think ill need to make up diffent party bags for the differnt ages...i have seen some cute ides for those for the little ones., which had teethers, stuffed toys (that should continue with the same theme) and treats of course... miamarshmella i wanted to get my DD one of those buggys but wasnt sure if it would be age appropriate..how does your little one go in it?

If you go the ladybug them check out sparties (spotlight) for lolly bags, cups napkins etc they had some really cute ones though I just used Red plastic cups and plates to tie in rather than patterned ones and just had the napkins and lolly bags.

I am also in the process of planning my DD first birthday for May. As she is not particularly into anything yet I am doing a rainbow theme (only coz we aren't a pink house).
For food I am doing only healthy options.
- Home made spring rolls
- mini fruit muffins with reduce sugar
- fruit on skewers like kebabs or a fruit platter using cutters to make shapes
- maybe a vege stick platter with home made dip too
- home made chicken nuggets. Just chicken breast cut into pieces and crumbed then oven baked so they are relatively healthy
- spinach and feta little parcels.
- + more that i haven't worked out yet.
I am doing a gift table or gift buffet instead of individual lolly bags (taken from the idea of lolly buffets that alot of weddings are having now). Using lots of big vases to display little toys, apples, necklaces, one type of lolly, popper or small water bottles, crayons or pencils etc. Then the parents can decide what their child gets. I am sewing little bags to put all the treats in.
As far as games most the kids will be to little so i have decided to make a whole lot of little instruments so they can play and make noise together while sitting on a big rug. My daughter loves this. Just like rice or pasta in little containers or things to hit for example. We may also all sing nursery rhymes.
Mine will be outside under some beautiful trees so I am making lots of pretty decorations to hang from the trees. Crystals, paper fans, and these spinning things I found at a $2 shop.
I am looking forward to hearing more of what you are doing also. It's so much fun isn't it.
I have also seen the ladybug costumes. So so cute.

We too are very particular when in comes to food...All her food is always prepared by myself or my DF whos a chef... So most of the food at the party will be natural and healthy too...but it is a birthday party after all and my little princess deserves a few little treats... I will post some food ideas when we have made up the menu... I love the gift table idea... its a really smart idea...And the instrument idea is awesome too...I might use this idea at my 22nd Bday (this sunday) for the kids that are coming to keep them amused... Oh and that is just beautiful under the trees... nothing better... Well keep us posted on how your party planning is going... I will be seriously starting my DD's party planning once my party is over and done with!!!

OK so just an update we have gone with the circus theme...some ideas we have so far are:
Clown that makes ballon animals
lots of hellium and foil balloons
circus stages with stuffed animals on them
a silly photo booth with a clowns wig, top hat and other circus dress ups
big circus banner that says Bellas big top circus
bunttings
a circus ring for the children to do a parade
cut outs of circus animals and circus pictures
best dressed prize
tight rope walking ( rope on the ground and the children have to walk it)
Ball toss into a lions mouth ( a big cardboard box with a lion painted on it)
pin the nose on the clown
a pinata
for food we are having circus themed food for the older kids and adults and the younger kids healthy options
for favours we are gettiing these little circus boxes and filling them with colouring pencils, a stuffed animal, colouring book, bubbles, a red nose and every child can take home a hellium balloon...
thats all so far hope this helps for others thinking about what to do for their little ones first birthday party.... when i think of more things i will update!!

Breechmumma - fantastic ideas!!!
Keeping it in perspective, bubs are just 1 and will largely not have a much idea what's going on. Your ideas are PERFECT and so relevant for the stage they are at. Love the gift buffet and ideas for them to play - music, outdoors, etc. So great.
Of course was going to run with the big beautiful dessert table that are being done full of gorgeous treats, but your idea of the gift buffet is awesome and so much more relevant for 1 year olds! (as opposed to a gorgeous dessert table full of lollies!!). Will do a version for the adults, but loving your ideas.. so thank you!
p.s. am no longer a mummyinwaiting but have a beautiful boy now 7 mths.

Well it is less then a week now until her party so I am working at getting everything organised. I am so happy with things so far. I am all about attention to details (one of the reasons I am a pastry chef and am a bit anxious and all that sometimes, haha) so everything has it's place and it's little embellishment. I managed to find lots of little things for my gift table on sale that are amazing. Some things only 99cents. Other things I made myself (quite a few things actually). I know it all sounds a bit extravagant but it has really been so cheap.
I have been making some of the food dishes and freezing them so they can just be cooked in the oven on the day. Made the spring rolls and spinach and feta spirals so far. Oh and my own tomato sauce. Still need to make muffins and chicken nuggets the night before as well as the fruit platters.
I have had these large timber storage boxes for a lot of years and it just came to me the other night that I should paint them in blackboard paint then the kids can draw on all sides of the cube for something different. Then I can use the boxes for my daughters storage afterwards and she can draw on them too.
My mum sewed about 30 bright colourful chair ties/ sashes for my baby shower so we are going to use a few of them again on some chairs scattered around the place but the main seating will be a massive blanket on the floor.
Sorry if I am going over this all again. I am kind of using it as a way to help me remember what to do.
It's actually 11pm and I am making the flowers for her cake so I better get back to it before it is really late.

mummyinwaiting.. Im not sure if you were saying that my ideas are inappropriate for a 1y.o birthday party..but if you were let me just say that obviously a one year old wouldnt understand everything that was going on but we will have around 15 other older kids ranging ages from 1 to 7 attending so there needs to be entertainment for them...And most of the games like ball toss and tight rope walking my DD will love as she loves walking and throwing balls in her toy boxes..Also i believe that your child derserves the very best that you can possibly give them... and i want her to look at all of her photos when she is older and see how much effort was put in to make her special days the best they possibly could of been..Just like i did..My mother was the same with me..not to mention our family loves party so why not go all out and have fun...

I was actually just replying to someone else's post and complimenting her about her great ideas.. in no way indirectly bagging any of your ideas, sorry but my post wasn't about you..
I've also been researching heaps into party ideas with grand gestures.. am not one to do things half way by any means. But breech mummy's ideas made me realise that I (as in me, not you) could really make it a party for my child with age specific activities - like the toys on the dessert table (and not just an enormous amount of lollies like I was planning) and music and activities - and still make our party a gorgeous affair that the grown ups will enjoy too. I'm so inclined to go OTT which I love to do, but hadn't really thought so far of how my 1 yr old would experience it.. so her post helped with some great suggestions.
Don't take it as this whole thread is about you.. just complimenting someone on their original ideas that I'm now using for my own party!! :)

Breachmamma.. just realised you would have had your party by now.. how did it go?
How lovely you made so much yourself! well done. I recently made a whole bunch of these gorgeous pom pom flowers for my neices 'Ice Cream Parlour' party recently.. my gosh!! They took quite a while to do, with her help of course, but wow they looked awesome hanging around the place. There was so many I gave each little girl one to take home for their rooms, was fantastic.
We also did labels for all the toppings.. lots of cutting and sticking. All the effort was rewarded when we saw the finished product and how much the kids loved the Ice Cream Parlour, and the parents were suitably impressed too!

It went so well. Everyone had the best time and I was very happy at the end of it. All my hard work paid off. I am just checking with some friends about privacy and if they mind me posting some pics. If it's ok then I will put some up for you to see.

oh thanks for sharing the pics! It looks like you all had such a delightful day. Love the setting outside under the trees and taking the play things outside, so beautiful. Gift table looks great, and the girls wearing the bandanas, cute! Looks like the chalk boxes worked well too.
congrats!
