View Full Version : Washing MCNs... question for all of you MCN addicts!

Hi ladies!

I have been using MCNs on bub for a few weeks now since her belly button healed and I'm just wondering...

When I wash the poo & wee out of the nappy before putting it in the pail (without water), is it possible to rub some sugar soap (laundry soap bar) on the poo area and leave it there until I put it in the wash? I was either every night or every morning.

I have a feeling this will be bad for the bamboo. It's just that the yellow doesn't always come out in the wash but it does fade in the sun... But some nappies still have the poo mark & I end up re-washing them.

I use an eco friendly laundry powder, only half of the recommended scoop.

Is there a better solution that you can recommend?

TIA :flowerz:

I wouldn't rub the soap on - too much soap can build up and then the nappies loose their absorbency so you'll end up having to strip wash them.

A lot of the poo stains don't come off in the wash but the sun will generally do the job. If I have a really pooey stain that hasn't come off rather than wash it again I just leave it on the line for another day. If the stain is still faintly there then I don't worry about it. The sun will get the majority out but it won't get rid of all stains. The sun kills any bacteria etc in the nappy so even if there is a faint mark it's not actually "dirty".

Goodluck.

I'd just leave them in the sun a bit longer ... and then just use them. The stains come out eventually with use/washing/drying. You've got too many other things to do as a Mum to worry about double washing nappies!

Also if they're BF poos, you can probably get away with chucking them straight in the bucket, and then just do a pre-wash rinse in the machine. It's the sticky-just-starting-solids or teething poos that you have to scrape and rinse by hand.

That yellow BF poo stain can be a pain, I've had a couple of washing loads where its stained half the load. But it comes out really well in the sun, in only a day.

I rinse the majority of the goo out, do a prewash if theres a few dirty nappies in it and sun dry. They come up ok.

i have never worried about rinsing out bf poo before washing- and never had a stain..

I only started rinsing when starting solids..

i wouldn't bother rinsing wee - rinse poo if you want but don't bother with the scrubbing or sugar soap. You are trying to minimise the amount of detergent build up in the nappies- not add to it.

just do a pre-rinse in your machine, before you do a wash cycle.

i have some nappies i use on a daily basis for the last two years which are like new and I never scrub or use excessive or extra washing powder.

good luck

Thanks ladies, you have all been so helpful!

I'm continuing to wash the BF poo off, just so it smells nicer in the laundry during the day and because... well... it seems strange to me to leave poo just lying about!

You are right, the stains are faded by the sunlight so that will do it! No double washes, no laundry soaps, just half the detergent I normally use.

Thank you so much for your replies!

Have a great day! :australia:

Ahh it might sound funny but if my stains don't come out in the wash or sun I don't stress too much. DS will probably just poo in them again! If it was on the outside I'd worry about it but otherwise I don't stress too much.
