View Full Version : Food Cravings whilst breastfeeding
Just want to know if there are any other breastfeeding mums who seems to have food cravings. I often crave chocolate and I'm not sure if it's to do with breastfeeding. I know I shouldn;t be eating too much chocolate so I'm trying not too indulge too much.

That's weird because I've craved chocolate like crazy too since bub was born. I just never thought of associating it with breastfeeding!
Add me to that list :p . As soon as I saw this thread title, in my mind I was thinking chocolate! I have always liked chocolate, and have always been quite partial to the odd bar now & then. But, I must say, since my sons birth, I've consumed family block after family block & really can't seem to stop  . I will watch this thread with interest.

I read that research was done on pregnant mothers who indulged in chocolate, ended up with much happier babies!!
I'd say that extends to breastfeeding, so INDULGE!!!! hehe
I not only crave chocolate, but it has to be dark choc at the moment... used to like it sparingly, but I'm buying it in blocks now :o
I am a rare breed (it seems) who was never particularly keen on chocolate. But yes, since some way into my pregnanct and continuing now that I am breastfeeding (8 months on) I can't get enough of chocolate either.
DH's eyes jump out of their sockets sometimes when he sees me not just eating chocolate, but like it's my last supper! :o
Yay.. let's say it IS because of breastfeeding and we will have happier babies. :smiliedance:
I might go searching for that study actually. Anything to validate my over indulgence in chocolate.

SUCH GOOD NEWS ON CHOCOLATE Pregnant women who ate chocolate daily while they were pregnant, gave birth to babies that they rated at 6 months to be more active, more positively reactive (smiling and laughing), and who showed less fear in new situations

Cocoa beans contain a large amount of chemicals called flavonoids. Scientists believe that these flavonoids can be used to create natural supplements to ease diarrhea symptoms. Dark chocolate contains high concentrations of cocoa and may offer mild relief.
:D :D
I must admit tha whilst I was bf I too ate more chocolate than ever. Now I know why.

says that a chocolate craving means you need magnesium, which you can get from nuts, legumes and fruits.
I find my craving is MUCH less if I have a small handful of almonds.
Add me to the list - M&M's are my "weapon" of choice!! :yelclap:
When i breastfed, I craved fish really badly had to eat it everyday. I especially craved smoked salmon:D

I too craved chocolate... BUT when I started BF it gave my DD really bad wind pains! Once it was cut out of my diet, she was a much happier baby... so I gave it up (even over Easter:( ). BUT now it doesn't bother her, so I will have to catch up on 8 months worth of chocolate:laughing:

I think so too!
I make my own toasted nut meulsi (no added fruit) and I never get huge cravings and if I feel like chocolate I just have a small bit and thats it for the day. I have always been a huge chocolate addict too!

Well, now that explains it!!! Everytime I am in the company of others - they comment on how Ryan is such a happy baby  And I thought it was the company he kept....... I'd better keep up my chocolate intake
Might also explain why Ryan's paediatrician classed him as a 'livewire' right from the beginning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
