Firstly I am really new to making MCN, actually I'm new to the whole sewing caper.....

I made a fleece cover to use with prefolds the other day...basically just winged it and drafted my own pattern and it works really well on my DD. Success!!!

So last night I made my first pocket....

I used a hidden layer of PUL between a pretty cotton (for the outer) and microfleece as the inner....the legs roll slightly out and I didnt use pins coz I heard that this can cause leaking...anyway it leaked!!

Or maybe it wicked, I dont know where I went wrong....it only leaked at the legs and didnt go down her legs or anything, the outer just got wetter towards the crouch as time went on...

Anyway I stuffed it with a bamboo and flanelette booster but I think the bamboo is really poor quality...I was given it and was told it was bamboo.

Is it more likely to be a problem with the booster??

How can I make some microfibre boosters...how many layers do I need? Should I be making them in conjunction with another material?

I feel as though the nappy itself fits DD really well....I guess I'm just a little lost

TIA

Cotton outers tend to wick very easily and you'll find they can only be worn for a short time to avoid this (unless your child is a very light wetter).

My DD tends to sweat more than wee and she will still have wicking on cotton outer nappies.

As for the boosters ... personally I wouldn't use microfibre unless it is sandwiched in between bamboo. Microfibre doesn't hold as much as bamboo and will get compression leaks.

I also make boosters out of (in total) six layers of bamboo (for a day nappy) ... this can be a combination of a two layer trifold or two 3 layer shaped boosters which are then sewn together along the top edge. Allows for quicker drying.

I hope that helps. :)

Try to make sure that when you stuff your nappy, the insert fits all the way to the edge of the pocket.

Also.. flannelet is the least absorbant of materials, so probably wouldn't have helped as a booster at all.

I love nappies that are 4 layers of bamboo topped by 3 layers of microfibre. I love microfibre as a top layer, because it draws the moisture away really quickly, and then if it's layered on top of the bamboo, the moisture gets held in the bamboo... so it has a double action, draw it away, and hold it away.

Hey Ladies,

Thanks for the replies, I had a microfibre towel here so stuffed the pocket with that just to see what happened and the nappy didnt wick at all....making me think the bamboo is poor quality afterall....

I have also made another pocket using fleece as the outer and that is even better...I am obsessed with this nappy making businesss......hehehehe.:p
