View Full Version : Returning to work...
red apple

Gidday.
I'm due to return to work soon after maternity leave. I've changed my mind and don't want to go back to work fulltime, praps 3 days a week at the most. They've never had part-time in my department but I want to put it to them. One of my friends suggested that I need to make me working part-time attractive to my boss. Workingpart-time would not keep the shift covered. Gawd - I dunno! Any suggestions?
Ta.
I'm in the same position red apple although my job can't be made part-time so I'm hoping I'll be offered another job in the company or they'll create something for me. Basically, the way I see it, if they don't give me what I want, then I'll leave and fine something else ( I'm hoping it won't come to that).
Not sure what type of work you do but are you able to prove to your boss that you can do everything you are supposed to on a part time basis?
I guess one of the attractions is that they don't have to replace you and train someone else for the position. And you can almost be as contactable as you want to be with mobile phones and email, whether you're in the office or not (if they had to ask you about something on your days off). Have a think about how you could make working part time work for your boss, how you suggest they deal with urgent things that come up on your days off etc.
You might want to think about doing a Mon/Wed/Fri so that they are only without you for a day at a time (although personally I hated working like that - I never actually felt like I was working part time - much prefer the 4 day weekend).
It will depend on your job and the flexibility of your boss. I've been lucky to have ppl say "OK" when I tell them I only want to work 3 days/week. You can only ask.
Cheers
I know how you feel, I returned full-time as my boss would not let me go 3 days :crying: I asked several times but they would not assist me at all.
Well today I resigned :smiliedance: the decision didn't come lightly as I work at a fun radio station, however I have found a two day a week job which is well paid and a new career path :smiliedance: . Already the stress is lifting off caring for a bubs, house and husband. The most important thing to me which I realised after returning to work is the time with bubs, you can't get that time back so I would rather struggle a bit and enjoy taking bubs to play groups and swimming etc.
I hope you company is more flexible than mine, however sometimes changing jobs can be the best thing all round :fingerscrossed: good luck. I am a bit scared about starting a new career in a couple of weeks but excited too.
