Spend the last two nights in Pmh, with damien....
He has really bad croup, along with a cold, and hasnt eaten for two days.
They gave him a one off shoot of steriods, and told me to give him painstop.
He had a temp of 39.4* at ten past nine, so they gave him some panadol, then at 10pm, he had gone up to 41*..

Just wondering if anyone else out there, has experienced this, and if so... What did you find helped???

Hiya Damiens Mum!! Sorry to hear bubby is ill here is a big hug from me!:hugs:
My step som had croup a few years ago and the only advice i cfan give you is to keep him as calm as you possibly can ( i know this is easier said than done) and also to sit in the bathroom with hot water running an apparently the steam is supposed to help in some way or another. i hope he gets better soon :hugs:

Thanks hun, The doc at the hospital told me there is nothing that will cure it, but just to help him feel less miserable, use the painstop. So here is hoping, but apparently, it can come back during winter weathers, until the age of three!

yeah mine gets it too....see if you can borrow a vaporiser from someone to put in his room at night......or they are about $40-50 from the chemist.

aww poor little man... must have been very scary for you having to go to pmh etc. :hugs:

the others have already recommended what i am going to suggest, but anyway...

ur supposed to run the shower with boiling hot water and stand just outside it with him so that he inhales the steam. vicks in a bath won't be nearly as good, you need heaps of steam. otherwise, some chemists hire out nebulisers or u can buy 1 urself if u can afford it. a nebuliser will really help him to sleep as well because u can put it in his room & it releases steam, also you can add vicks to some of them.

as the doc says, give him painstop, this is way stronger than panadol. it will bring his fever down, codeine helps to dry up mucus and also its sedating so it will help him to sleep.

also, try to stay calm urself and not panic because it will rub off onto him.

as with any illness, keep the fluids up because a fever is very dehydrating. if you can't force much water into him, there's this stuff u can buy from chemists that's special rehydrating ice blocks with minerals and stuff in them for kids. also, sugar ice blocks work well if he likes them.

best of luck & hopefully he'll get better soon :fingerscrossed:

Oh poor little Dammo and poor you! I hate croup it sounds so horrible. Yep I am going to say the same as everyone else wrap him in a towel and steam up the bath room, but if you are worried about your water bill or water restrictions (but who is when they have a sick bubba and its the middle of the night) I would just hire a vapouriser from that chemist down the road. Or if you cant get out let me know and I will grab it for ya!:hugs:

What did you find helped???hi thre sorry to hear damien has croup. its terrible i know. my dd has suffered since 6mths. as the others said try keeping him calm and in a steamy bathroom. also a vapouriser works well. my dd gets it alot and my gp has her on redipred it is a steroid so u can only give the dose once per night for 3 consecutive nights then u must stop for at least a week. if it starts up again u repeat and if it still doesnt clear then off to drs again... i hav never had to do it more than once. then she might go a month or so without another bout of croup. :fingerscrossed: no croup so far this cold season.
good luck and hang in there.

Thanks heaps guys for your support and advice, i'm trying very hard to keep it together and stay calm, but its very hard. He looks like he has been bashed in the eyes, they are so bruised looking, the dr said that's because his body is dry, as he hasnt eaten, or taken much fuild. Yesterday i let him have a whole sml lemonade from macca's, should have seen the looks i was getting, but i didnt care, i just wanted my boy to drink! If he would have taken coffee i would have offered it, lol.

Best of luck i am hoping for, the dr said 3-4 days until he will be better!

Thanks again everyone, i appericate it :hugs:

Lucas also gets croup (not severe enough for hospitalisation) but I've also found that the vapouriser (just on plain water - no eucalyptus) and the redipred work extremely well.
Hope your little one gets better soon :hugs:

Thanks skyjax, they gave damien it in syrup in the hospital, and the dr there, actually told me it was a once off, dose that he could have, to not stop croup, but to shorter the time that it lasts, is that what you got told?

The twins i look after have croup and a virus at the moment too. They are 21mths. One of them was just up at PMH the other night because of it and he too had a one off steriod shot which has helped. Aparently they've had many cases this year. A change in temperature also can ease it off but if it's bad go straight back to PMH. Everyone else has given you all the info so hopefully that will help and hopefully it will pass quick. The twins 7yr old sister had it last winter so thats a lie about it stopping at 3. She also has the steriod at home but the doctor would'nt perscibe any medication for thetwins. Big cuddles to your little man, maybe try giving him some formula bottles if he'll take them. As for the other people giving you bad looks - just give them straight back. You cant judge a book by its cover neither should you judge someone by seeing a snippet of their life.

dont mean to burst a bubble here or anything just a warning... please dont expect it to stop at age 3 because it is not true.. although it may be true in some cases in most it is not.. my nephew had it last weekend and he is 7 turning 8.. he has been in pmh several times before the age of three and after.. so be prepared... its horrible and i hope your boy makes a quick recovery..

Lol, that's what i thought aswell, i havent been to see my Dr, as he seems to be getting better, just slowly!!

Hired out a vapouriser from the chemist today, seems to be working well... He has had A weetbix for dinner the last two nights, the only thing he is eating, but he is drinking alot more now, so im not as worried.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the great support and advice!

I tell you what, i was a bit hesitate to outlay the money for one, as things are a tad tight at the moment, but i am so glad i did, even helped with the DH's snoring.. Shhh, he will kill me for sharing that!

Im not sure, if its because damien hasnt been well, but he is even sleeping in aswell! Lol
