View Full Version : How often does your child get sick?
I hope I am writing this in the right section.
My 2 y.o DS is sick agin with a fever. he's got the normal viral infection symptoms. I'm just wondering what is the normal amount of times for a toddler around that age to get sick. We've just moved to Nth qld in september and since then he has 5 viral infections, 1 of them which involved a 2 night stay at hospital due to the infection moving into his lungs. Anyway he went to daycare for one day for about 7 weeks and he went for his first day this year on wednesday and low and behold he woke up this morning cranky and feverish.
Before we moved he went to daycare twice a week for about 3 months and got sick once. Is this just a coincidence, dp wants to change childcare centre but perhaps i should just wait and see if he gets used to it?
I'm probably just stressing out over nothing but i really hate seeing my little man so sick

I hope your little one feels better soon :goodvibes:
and to answer your question ,
my Ds is 3 and he doesn't get sick often ,
maybe look into it at the doctors ,
he might need multivitamins.

My kids get the odd snotty nose.
My four year old has three times been to the doctor, for a bad case of conjunctivitis, an ear infection and once for a chest infection.
My three year old has only been to the doctor once- for a bad chest infection.
My baby has never needed to see a doctor.
We eat a lot of good bacteria in home made yogurt as well as all kids being breastfed for extended periods.
We don't go to daycare, but do playgroup and lots of other activities with large amounts of children.
Hope he is better soon.

My DS doesnt get sick very often, but when he does he gets really sick. ATM he is getting over a chest infection and we are on week three oflaying around doing nothing (on antibiotics). Before that I think itw ould have been a cold in winter.
My 20 month old DD rarely gets sick.
This might be BS but I have heard that ppl get sick more often in humid environments, so perhaps that's it?

My kids rarely get sick as well.
My 5 year old maybe once a year - but he gets really bad - temps over 41 and fitting etc. Thank god it doesn't happen often as its pretty scary.
My 2 year old has been sick twice - first time she was prescribed antibiotics then reacted and the second time was hospitilised with a severe lung infection/bordering pnemonia.
Must admit I have only been sick maybe once in the last 5 years.
Both of my children attend daycare and can honestly say they are sick less than my friends who have kids that never attend daycare.
My children have a dose of vitamins daily as well and have done for as long as I can remember.
I think the problem with living in a warm climate is most people run an air con (which are germ breeders in my mind) then go in and out - in to the cool - out to the heat all day long.

My 4 kidlets havent been sick once since we moved here in Sept last year (touch wood)
We have had a big lifestyle change though, eat barely any processed foods, no takeaway (as there is none here) eat lots more fruit and veg etc etc.
If your child has started a new childcare it is common for them to be constantly sick for a few months till there immune system builds up.
Maybe boost immunity with some fish oil tablets and a big glass of orange juice each morning.

DS1 is nearly 10 months and he has probably been sick about 5 times, just the common cold though....so easy to catch, we are always at the shops etc

My almost 20 month old DS seems to get sick ALL THE TIME. Since september last year he's had chicken pox, bronchitis, impetigo, hand foot and mouth disease.... shall I continue??
He is still BF on demand and he eats a healthy diet with lots of FRESH fruit and veg. He is not in day care but has school aged cousins who he plays with and seems to catch most things off!!
I dunno if this is helpful but I answered your question. Sorry your DS is having a bad run! I hope he picks up again soon :)

ds is 11 months tommorrow and has had 1 cold, when he was 4 months old. he was FF and i stoped sterilizing at 5 months.
i would say the main reason he would be getting sick is daycare. appaerntly they constantly get cold from other kids..

My 6.5 year old gets about 3 mild colds a year, just a little bit of a runny nose and a bit of coughing lasting no more than about 8 hours each time. She's had vomiting twice since birth. So not often at all, considering she was in childcare from 1.5 years of age.
I suggest having it looked into as well, that's concerning for a child to get sick that often.
My DD got sick regularly because of child care. It was when I changed her from formula to cows milk after 12 months. I put her back on toddler formula for her night milk drink to give her an extra boost and that seems to have done the trick...

That's why I don't like to follow things like giving them straight cow's milk and no more breastmilk/formula from 12 months of age. They're still babies with immature immune systems and need the extra vitamins that don't come in cow's milk. I recommend for parents to continue breastfeeding or use formula up to 2 years rather than 12 months before introducing cow's milk.

DS gets sick often but he has health issues that contribute to it. Unfortunately once you have been sick your immune system decreases and it makes you more susceptible to it....
The year we moved interstate both DS and I were sick a lot and there was no childcare or really anyone to blame. It was just the different environment. I wouldn't rule the move out of being part of the issue. Meanwhile I would be looking into immune system boosting foods to assist build him back up

Probably once or twice a year so far, and she's only had colds, no other kinds of illness (yet). She had a real bad cold last year though that was more like the flu.
But she doesn't go to daycare or anything. I give her pentavite, a liquid multivitamin. I'm thinking I will keep ds on toddler formula rather than switch to cows milk at 12 months.

i wouldn;t use the toddler formula, its so high in sugar. I would just stay on the same formula, like step 2 i think its called? Thats what i done with DS. I didn't feel comfortable using cows milk so i kept him on the same formula until he was about 2yrs old.
My kids hardly ever get sick. They caught a spewy bug going around earlier this year. Other then that they have a couple of colds that only last a day or 2.
They both went to daycare too. But we stay away from a lot of processed foods and the kids eat lots of fresh fruit and veg. When they do get sick they only just touch on it and have a great immune system that fights it off almost straight away.
ds#1 who is 5 gets sick about 2 x a year
ds#2 who is 7 months has been sick about 4 times since he has been born 2 x hospital stays, unfortunately he got his mothers lungs who shut down everytime he gets a runny nose :|

I would be wary of using toddler formulas as well - the sugar is bad but a friend had trouble with one.
Her son got sick and stopped eating - would have only a couple mouthfuls each meal and he was also having toddler formula. She ended up takin him to a paed as he had lost so much weight and the paed told her that toddler milk is actually dangerous if they aren't eating right as it doesn't have ENOUGH vitamins and minerals to sustain them. He basically said a child on toddler formula with a bad diet will become severly malnourished.

My 11mth old DS got a cold on day 4 in daycare and has been sick with a runny nose, sneezing and now a chesty cough on and off ever since (4 weeks later).
He gets better in the 4 days when he's home with us but then has to go back to daycare for 2 consecutive days and gets sicker again and so starts the whole cycle again...
It's really annoying and sad for him but I'm told it'll be like this for approx 3 months until his immunity is stronger.
Can anyone recommend some natural remedies that I can give him to strengthen his immunity & help him recover faster from a cold? Most things aren't suitable for under 2 years so there's really nothing I can do for him but I'm sure there'd be some natural remedies I'm not aware of that I should try. I'm using Panadol where necessary, Baby Balsam on his chest & saline nasal spray and the bulb suction which seems to help but I'd be interested in some natural remedies if you know of any that are effective.
Thanks
