Hi there everyone, I am in the process of trying to work out when I ovulate. I have 2 beautiful girls already, both unplanned, had a couple of attempts at baby no. 3, with no result as yet... What I am wondering is, I get my period every month, most times around the 16th of every month, however, my cycle is roughly around 28-34 days in length varying each month... So without fail I get them each month, but they vary is this regular or irregular... Is there others out there who get there period each month but not every 28 days as is classed as normal, and if so, can tell me how I would know if I was ovulating, I hope this makes sense???

Hi noniandlily's mum

That's very normal to be irredular. I'm trying to remember the term for the 2 different normals but as it's late in the afternoon my brain has switched off. Most womwn will either get their period so it falls on the same day or the same date each month, check it out you'll be surprised.

Hi there,

It took us quite awhile to fall pregnant, due to endometriosis and the fact that I think that I was listening too much to the specialists telling me when to do it and when not to do it. Some women's cycles follow that of the moon, when it is full they are ovulating, also I was told to check my mucus, when it is like a egg white then this is the time you are ovulating. For me I also got ovulation pains in my stomach mid way through my cycle and it turned out that the 12,14, and 16th day that I was supposed to ovulate was not the actual time that I was ovulating even though my periods were regular 28-30 days. Also you can check your temperature to see when you are ovulating...and there are also the ovulation kits that you can buy at the supermarkets....
Hope some of this helps, let me know how you go....

Good Luck

Hi noniandlily's mum
I used a great book called "natural fertility" by Francescia? Naish and it explains how to read your own body, you can borrow from your local library and I also used a lunar chart that I had drawn up. We fell pregnant first try, would highly recommend this book.

Good luck

HI Noniandlily'smum,
I totally understand your frustration. We took ages too fall with Harry and it was because I had irregular periods after coming off the pill. Mine came every 5 weeks or so instead of 4. So all the stuff I read about ovualting at week 2 or so didn't apply to me. On some websites they have ovualtion calculators, where you put in your info and it tells you when you should be ovulating. Also someone else mentioned ovulation kits and taking your basel temp. You can take your basel temp with a special thermometre from the chemist, you take it each morning before you get out of bed and you will notice over the month that your temp goes up when you are ovualting. Take your temp for a few months and you will start to see the pattern. Also the kits you get from Woolies or the chemist are a good idea if you know roughly when you are due to ovulate but can get very expensive if you don't and are doing it everyday.
After doing all this for what seemed like forever we finally fell with Harry and what did it....was going on holidays, that and some natural tonic I was taking from a herbalist, we nicknamed it baby toxin because it smelt and tasted awful, but I believe it worked.
I know telling you to relax doesn't help, as it didn't help me, cause for the beginning of the month you are thinking " it's coming up, it's coming up" and for the rest of the month you are thinking "am I, am I, am I".
All I can say is good luck and enjoy the trying. :)

Hi again,

I too have got the Natural Way to better babies books that Franchesca has written, I found them very helpful also, although I agree with Harry's mum, even though I know how hard is it to relax and not worry about it. We fell when we least expected it to happen, we were actually going to start fertility treatment in June if I got my periods, had the appointments all lined up, and then we found out that month that we were pregnant.....

Hey Noniandlilys'mum,

I totally understand your frustration and confusion. I have a 8 month old, but took 6 months to get pregnant, but my periods once i went off the pill were anywhere between 30 to 55 days apart, but finally figured out that i believe you ovulate about 5-7 days after your period finishes. I never really worked it out properly, I just got lucky i think! :)

Hi,

My husband and I were frustrated too, we had been trying for just over two years, with no sign of success. My periods were similar - not totally irregular, I'd get them every month, but I never knew when exactly. Neither of us had children, so we didn't know what the problem was.

You can get ovulation tests from the chemist. I found one that cost ~ $60 but you can reuse it month after month, because it is a little microscope with a light that shows up crystal/fern like patterns in your saliva when you are ovulating - the one I got was from a brand called "Maybe Baby", I think I got it at EPharmacy. It's much better value than spending money on the urine test sticks.

Don't know if it was coincidence, but we fell pregnant within a few months of pinpointing my ovulation with this thing. In fact I was already preggo when I started charting my cycle the proper way by my daily temperature, and I thought I'd stopped ovulating all together! So it was great to find out that it was in fact, quite the opposite!

Hope that is of some help, keep trying and best of luck :)

Thankyou, to all of you... It seems we are all so similar when it comes to conceiving... This would be baby number 3... I have been doing everything from charting my bbt, checking my cm(cervical mucous, gross I know) to doing the ovulation kits(the urine ones, which have not yet given even a reading)... We have also been abstaining from intercourse, as we are trying for a boy, in Dr Shettles book, How to Choose the Sex of your Baby... My poor husband, who has been doing so well, and I am just frustrated by the whole conception thing, our 2 girls were unplanned, so we figured we are proned to have girls, which I don't mind if we had another girl, but would like a boy for our own reasons... I mean I used to get a little ache every month, and I just knew I was ovulating, but as we were not yet ready to have anymore it was not an issue, we just were carefull around that time... Anyway, I am sure it will happen eventually, patience, I keep telling myself, and I am trying not to seem selfish as I am lucky to have two beautiful girls in the first place... Once again Thanks a lot... Haana  undefined
