Hi there all, just a question in regards to Low Iron... Last week at my 38 week check up I was told that my iron was on the lower side (hg 100, meant to be 105-150)... They did give me an iron supplement to take but is very constipating so I decided to opt for a herbal iron supplement... Had started taking a herbal iron supplement about 2 days before I had the blood test which was about 3 or 4 weeks ago now, but would not have been long enough to show up in a blood test... My question is has anyone else had low iron and had relatively no major blood loss (no haemorraging) and no clots??? And has anyone used floradix or maxi iron for women by natural nutrition??? Just a little concerned about my iron as I had lossed a bit of blood in my last birth and not really sure how my iron was back then??? Any info or advice would be appreciated, just don't scare me... I guess it's a scary thought that you could go at any time and not know whether your in for a good or bad outcome... :)

Hi There,
I also had low Iron as I am vegetarian. I used some iron tablets called Fero Grad C. They are great because they are designed to avoid constipation. They contain vitamin C also.
I had my baby 3 weeks ago and I lost 780mls of blood during labour but I had a fairly traumatic delivery which required an episiotomy so I dont know if that is why I lost that much blood.
What I do know is that my Iron levels were great before I gave birth so I would reccomend Fero Grad C for sure. :)
Hope all goes well for you.

I was advised by my OB not to take my iron tablets with eggs as this hindered the absorbtion of the iron - there was something else he told me to avoid at the time of taking them but for the life of me I can't remember - damn baby brain!!

Hi Haana,
I think I was taking the tablets for the last 6 weeks or so. I was told to take two tablets each night. Apparently your body is more able to absorb vitamins at night. I would take them right before bed.
Might be best to ask the Doctor though as you might need a higher dosage. :)

hi all,
i also had low iron during my pregnancy which dipped up and down, i took the fero grad c as well, i am also vegetarian so i can recomend eating lots of leafy greens and wholegrains this will help boost your iron intake (replace your white bread with brown or even better wholemeal grain).
if you team your wholegrains with vitamin c this will increase your absorbtion of iron, so a glass of orange juice with peanut butter on wholemeal grain toast is a great combo. (i was a big fan of this for breakfest every morning)
the wholegrains and greens will also help with the constipation ;)
peace

yay for vegetarian mums!
I had low Iron last time, and took liquid ferro force which I found great as it does not cause constipation at all.
I took it from about 20 weeks I think.
I only lost about the normal amount of blood, and the other thing I drink regularly is 'Grants' chlorophyll which is pretty much alfalfa juice.
I drank screeds of it straight after birth, as it is supposed to be the closest thing to human blood, and really helps to build you up again.

HI all,
I used to take an iron supp (Fefol?) with a vit C tablet....days I ate meat I'd skip the tablet and have an OJ with the red meat as this helps the absorption. I hate eating meat everyday......
Peppita's (Pumkin seeds) are supposed to be full of iron.Chomp, chomp......

I found Floradix to be brilliant.
