View Full Version : How long was your child's hair when you first cut it and how old were they?
I was bullied into cutting my son's hair the other day for the first time (apart from a few fringe trims in the past) and afterward I was so devastated. I could hardly look at my son without crying. He looked like a different boy, and I actually felt like the boy I loved and was so proud of had been taken away and replaced by an imposter!
He is 16 months old tomorrow and had hair basically down to his shoulders.

I'm feeling much better about it now, but I have become obsessed with hair!
So, I'm just wondering, how long was your child's hair before you did the first cut, how old were they, and how did you feel afterward? I'd love to see before and after pictures too if anyone is willing to share.
Here is a link for my son after the cut: http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/ii83/javic75/?action=view¤t=iphone021.jpg

DS hair was about the same length as your DS's hair was. He had the cutest curls bit his hair was so thin that it did need to be cut to thicken it up. He was about 18 months old when we cut it.

DS1 had his first haircut just shy of his 2nd birthday it was similar to your DS's hair with gorgeous little curls. I was SO completely devistated as it was a terrible bowl cut and was right before MIL and FIL came to visit from interstate. It took me a good 3 months to recover lol.
DS2 just had his first haircut at 5 months. He has had masses of hair since birth and always gets comments on it but it was getting so wispy we gave him a number three all over to encourage it to thicken. We cut both boys hair at the same time (DS1's was a bit of an experiment as we let his hair grow quite long ever since the said bowl cut haha) To be honest I was quite upset and wondering what the heck I had let DH do it for, but now a few weeks on it has grown on me and I have come to terms with the fact that hair can always grow back
Your DS is absolutely gorgeous by the way!
My son is the same age as yours and we've not yet cut his hair.
But his hair is pretty short, other than what is starting to look like a rats tail at the back...
I would like to give the back a little snip, but my partner is a bit sentimental about it and I think he might be a bit grumpy if I cut it.:D
DS was 15mths when he had his hair cut.

Can i just say your DS has a beautiful head of hair!! :goodvibes:
Our DS had his first trim when he was about 18 months old, and it was only because he has such fine hair that a bit of a cut helped thicken it up. It's thickening up a bit now, but he's so blonde that it doesn't look like he has much anyway.

My first DS was 14 months when he had his first haircut. He had very long curly hair.
My 2nd DS was 2 when he had his... it wasn't that long but it grew more around the back and sides (like old man hair..lol) so it really needed to be tidied up.

I have cut my Son's hair once as people were saying things as he's hair was very long ,
he has curly hair
but in the bath I noticed it was way down he's back
it curls up when dry so it was a bit long ,
I really hated seeing him looking different with he's hair cut it's just not him ,
but now it's starting to grow some more ,
he has some style to it :D.
my son is almost 3 years old he's birthday is tomorrow .
I need to take one of my boys for his first haircut, as he keeps getting mistaken for a girl, everyone alwys says "twins....boy and girl" my DH is getting quite uptight about it!!
I do have to say that I think your LO looks blardy gorgeous with his hair cut (well he looked as great before as well:D)
Thanks so much SammieSnail, mudpiecake and Jezzy for the lovely comments!
Thanks SammieSnail and Ruby Slippers too for letting me know you were also devastated about your sons' haircuts. It takes a while to come to terms with it doesn't it! My friend said it took her 1 month and I thought that was a long time - but 3 months...! Luckily, my DS's hair seems to be growing back already so I'm feeling better day by day.
Jezzy, my son kept getting called a girl too and it was irritating me - but, now, i want my girl back!
IndigoJ, I think your son looks so lovely with his neat haircut. His hair was very sweet before but the cut shows off his cutie-pie face!

8 weeks, she had a mullet that would get knotty and hurt her. I still have the inch of hair! Love it!

Sorry I can't help my DD is only 5 months old and not much hair at all.
I just wanted to say your son looks grear In both pictures but now with he's hair cut you can see he's beautiful face.
Dont stress I think it looks lovely.
All 4 of my little ones were born bald and their hair grew very slowly. They all got thier 1st haircut at about 3 yrs old and even then, their hair wasn't long or thick.
Now, they all have thick hair that grows too fast!
my son was almost 7 months..he was born with a lot of hair (but it was all on the top) and was just getting into his eyes and they way it grew, we had to do the comb over all the time and it looked funny.
it didnt bother me that i had to cut it.
DD was 3 and a couple of mths before I cut her hair....
This (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/KJM1310/DSCF3197.jpg) is her hair just before her 3rd bday and on her 3rd bday (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/KJM1310/DSCF3237.jpg)
A couple of mths later it was cut this (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/KJM1310/DSCF3379.jpg) short (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/KJM1310/DSCF3376.jpg)
Already it is back to just past her shoulders..... it is a little deceiving being quite curly, in that when wet, it was actually quite long before being cut....
Thanks so much, waterlily! Makes me feel better :)
Veritas, your daughter is lovely! How old is she now? Three years is a long time before a haircut but if I have a daughter I'll be waiting just as long! How did you feel once it was cut?
I cut her hair October last year.... so she's only a few mths older now....
I missed her beautiful curls once they were gone... and she looked so much more grown up.... but they have grown back, and the curl is back.... I'm quite surprised how quick it has grown actually....
This (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/KJM1310/PC140029.jpg) was taken at Xmas, and this (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/KJM1310/P1140033.jpg) just the other day.... neither are great pics as her hair is tied up in both, but it has grown heaps from how short it was...

My DD is almost 22 months old now, and has gorgeous blonde hair to her shoulders. DF and I have decided we will not cut her hair for quite a while. Its just too gorgeous! Its at a length now though that we can tie it all up in a pony tail and give her a little fringe which we brush to one side and clip it. Looks gorgeous.
I would be absolutely devastated if her hair got cut, but I think the only person that would cut it would be DD. Lol.
