View Full Version : No heartbeat 8weeks, could dates be wrong?

Having a scan at what I believed to be 8w/4d (based on first day of last period), Iwas told there was no heartbeat, and the gestation appeared to be just 6wks/6days, and she questioned my dates. My GP said it was likely to be fetal demise, and took my HCG levels yesterday, with a view to compare them with another test next week... the wait is killing me... is there any hope my baby is alive??? Can you ovulate at 26 days?? (my periods are a little erratic) This is the only way the scan could be accurate. Even so, shouldn't there be a detectable heartbeat by 7 weeks anyway?? HELP

Jo - I'm so sorry for your horrible experience. You certainly can ovulate at 26 days, if your periods are around 40 days long. But you're right, there should be a defintely be a detectable heartbeat at 7 weeks. I hope everything is OK.
I went for an u/s when I was pg with Ozzy when by my dates I should have been over 8 weeks yet I was only just 6 weeks, is it possible you could have your dates wrong?

My second bubs scans were always all over the place for estimate dates. I knew my last period dates as we had been trying for ages, but they never added up to the scans dates. he was just a large baby, at 32 weeks scan he showed 38 weeks 4 days gestation. I hope all goes well with your results but do not worry yourself as today's "technology" is not always correct.
Good Luck

My LMP definately began by May 27. GP has said that only chance of baby being alive is if I ovulated very late this cycle... my biggest worry is that even if dates are wrong, at 6w/6d there should have been a heart beat detected...

Hi Jo
Because I got pregnant the first cycle off the pill - I wasnt too sure how far along I was. I went to the US thinking I was nearly 10w to be told that I was just off 7w. I am now 15w and going along nicely :fingerscrossed:
:fingerscrossed: everything works out for you
:hugs: :hugs:

Have they tried an internal? With my second we had a scan at 6 weeks and they only JUST picked it up with an internal U/S.
Sorry to hear you are having to go through this wait and worry :hugs:
I certainly do know someone just 3 weeks ago my girlfriend went for an u/s had bad cramps and bleeding they stated that she was 8 1/2 weeks and no heartbeat was detected she went back a week later and it said she was only 6 weeks in gestation, a week after that she was told that she was 9 1/2 weeks and the heart beat was visible and everything looked fine, she is now 13 weeks pregnant and everything appears to be normal, scans are all accurate her blood tests hcg is increasing as it should be so everything appears fine with her, I thought i was 12 weeks at my first scan and I know what day i fell pregnant and when I went for a scan they said I was only 9 weeks so if you have a long luteal phase you may not be as far as you thought, hope everything goes well, but don't rely on dates and such too much, they come when they come, their due when their due and I didn't have a heartbeat show on my scans till after 7 weeks i'll keep my :fingerscrossed: for you

If you are sure of your dates then I wouldnt want to wait...
Get a second opinion......
You can go up to your hospital and tell them you are getting cramping and you want a scan.... they will do a scan to check... if they still can not find a heaertbeat then you will have your answer...
did u have a vaginalscan to find the heartbeat ? as I believe this is how they check so early on...
Goodluck:fingerscrossed:
Try not to stress as much as you can.. because if everything is ok then baby needs you to be strong...

Hun :hugs: I agree with Brokendove....go hospital, fake you are having cramps and are worried something is up (which you are worried anyway).... ask for internal U/S as you think you may only be 6 weeks (Tell them you're not sure when you're LMP was...as its been SUCH a long cycle) and yes it is possible to O that late in a cycle. Many women do.
I had to have an internal U/S with my first bub, because they said that with a normal scan it would be hard to detect the bub's heart beat at only 6 weeks.
:fingerscrossed: and try to stay strong for your baby :hugs:
We are here for you!!
This is my third pregnancy and I went for a scan @ 6 weeks and they couldnt see a fetus, yolk sac or a h/b. I t was until my next scan @ 8 weeks that they were able to see the bubs and h/b. I am now 7 months pregnant. I hope it all works out for you.

If you have a tilted uterus it can be hard to see a heartbeat so early.
If you are looking for some hope there's a good site www.misdiagnosedmiscarriages.com which has examples of women told that they were going to miscarry for various reasons and then went on to have healthy bubs.
I really hope it works out for you.

A woman I know went for her 8 week scan and was told was no heartbeat and her baby was gone. They were devo'd. a week later she went for another scan, I think to find out if D&C was needed and right up the top of her uterus, tucked out of the way, was a healthy 9 week foetus. Apparently the way it was positioned, and the tilt of her uterus hid it the time before.
She had her little girl last month.
*crosses fingers for you* Good luck, I hope things turn out for you..
Hi all i tryed lizzie0808's link and couldn't get it to work. I googled it and came up with this http://www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com/ to don't know if it is spelt any different or not. But thanks lizzie0808 it looks to be an inspirational site...... only wish i had heard about it and got a second opinion
