I feel that many Australian's are missing the point of Australia Day. To me it isn't only the day that commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 or Invasion Day" as many of you like to call it. But it is also a day where we celebrate who we are as a whole today.
Not because of the bad, but because of the good. We look at the good, at what we have achived as a county, we look at our great history and how we have progressed in a positive light (eg the government apolagising to the aborigonal community for the past and welcoming immigrants into our country after the World wars and eve today, learning about their culture and great sense of cummunity).
To me Australia Day is about the true Australian. Not because we are white, black, asian, aborigional etc etc but because all Australians have good in them that is a part of our culture as one. We are known for helping eachother out through thick and thin. Through past wars, current wars, past and current natural disasters, financial struggle family and health problems and the list goes on that we should be proud of. And "giving you a fair go".
It sorrows me that many of you choose not to celebrate it like I do.If we keep on going on about the racial tension that is still there today then it will ALWAYS be there and we will never grow from it. Yes bogans will always be bogans and ********* will always be ********* and see it as an excuse to be racist and pick fights. But don't let that crap ruin your day. It isn't who you are, I'm sure you are all a fine example of true aussie mums and that is definently worth celebrating in my honest opinion!:australia:

I totally agree!!! And you know what those "aussie pride" bogans would change their opinion if the country was at peace with one another.....They are just not informed....they need educating!
I love our country. On my mums side i had a great great something on the 1st fleet......and on my dads side, we only came out from scottland 60 years ago.
So, i am a VERY proud australian.....not for what happened in the past, but for what will happen in the future! :australia:

Pretending the past didn't happen won't make it go away.
We can't change and grow unless we are 100% honest and we have learnt from the past, and clearly many people have not.

of course you cant pretend.....But you cant live in the past. You have to move forward. I dont intend to forget or pretend the past never happened, and i will be telling my baby, and all other children what happened, but i will also focus on the amazing points that ALL australians have. As a country, as leaders, as world know people......we do pretty well.

I never said "forget our past"did I? No. Does the negative outweigh all the lives Australia has enriched? No. We will never forget it is as a part of our history. But that means we grow and lean from it. And no not everyone will obviously because there will ALWAYS be bogan racist idiots no matter wherever you go.
I agree with the OP! For me personally Australia Day is extra special. I think about how much my parents sacraficed to immigrate here for my brother and I! If we were still living in our country of birth neither of us would have the education we have today! I wouldn't be considered a professional, hell I would be lucky to have a job! I think we are lucky t be citizens of such a great nation!

i love the fact that australia is so multicultural, and it saddens me that on australia day people decide to have racist arguments etc! just because we want to embrace australia the way it is today does not mean we do not think about the past aswell! i guess though we ALL still have a very long way to go before equality will ever be evidant... sadly!!!!
i hope you all had wonderful celebrations!!!
