I don't know if i'm being silly or not but here goes.
On turning 8 months, our son pulled himself up to standing for the first time. it's like someone just turned a switch that day & he does it all the time. Of course i am extremely happy for him but it's like he has the motor skills and no sense at all, like he decides all of a sudden that he doesn't need to hold on thankyouverymuch and goes crashing down in a spectacular fashion.
i know he's not the first kid to do this but when he does it in his cot i really worry that he will hurt himself badly as he's had a couple of doozies already. he's almost 80cm and 9.5 kg & the bigger they are and all that..
i know one day he'll make the connection between letting go and falling but what to do in the interim? he's so proud of himself and excited so i don't get cross at all when he does it in bed, i just gently hold him and lie him on his tummy (his preferred sleeping position). outside of his bed i help him stand up and play as he wishes to.
any suggestions, similar stories or am i just being over-protective?

Suggestion: stop worrying, he is fine and won't hurt himself badly at all.
He will learn quickly to hold on or to fall a certain way so he doean't hurt himself. Oh what a great age it is with all the bumps and bruises, you'll get used to it I'm sure.
Good luck!:hugs:

I reckon he's probably less likely to hurt himself falling in the cot than on the floor.
AS long as the cot is lowered (so he can't fall out) and he only falls his height he should be fine.

lol millions of babies must fall in their cots without any ill effects. (that we can attribute to anyway ;) )

I agree that it's unlikely he'll hurt himself in his cot, but I totally understand your concern. My DS (9 months) is a bit of a zamikaze so my nerves became a little freyed from him standing and then crashing on our tiled loungeroom floor.... So I tried to teach him how to get down gently: First step, I offered my hand and guided him to sit from standing. From there, I would offer my hand but lower it a bit more each time so he had to squat down to reach it. He soon learned to lower himself to my hand until I would put my hand on the floor and he was then getting himself down independently (this only took a day or so). Sure, they'll learn it in their own time but us mum's have to put up with the worry in the meantime!! Good luck!

my ds has bumped his head millions of times lol he even at one stage took to head butting the walls (and they are concrete) lol but he is fine :) like everyone else said less damage when they do it in a cot.
