My DS is circ'd. We got him done at 6 months for medical reasons. I am pregnant again and due in Feb. I am worried that if I have another boy that he could end up with the same problems that my first son has had.

I don't necessarily regret having him circ'd because he is now a very healthy, happy little boy. BUT, I hated having to put him through that whole ordeal and would not wish the situation on anyone.

I am not planning on having this child (if a boy) circ'd. Again, it would only happen if medical reasons arose that had no alternative.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if their is a greater likelihood that (if this is a boy) this child would have the same problems? Hereditary factors etc.

I am quite worried that it is going to happen again. :(

You don't mention if the condition he had was heriditary/genetic or not. if it wasn't, then I would say that if this bub is a boy, then the chance would be pretty slim of him having the same condition. But if it was, then you should be able to tell sooner IYKWIM and be able to do it within weeks of birth.

as browniebear said - its hard to say anything else as you dont mention what the medical condition was

Sorry - should have been more specific...

The opening of his foreskin was too tight and would puff up when he pee'd but what it was doing was getting the bacteria from under his foreskin and it would travel back up and give him UTI's. The specialist also indicated that he would have a problem with foreskin retraction as he got older.

I don't think this has been a problem in our family before other than a cousin of mine who had the same problem as a baby. They had another boy but had him circ'd at birth so we really don't know if it was necessary or not - he may or may not have had the problem.

I am really hoping seeing as there is no strong link in the family that this was a one-off problem, but it is playing at the back of my mind still. :(

I don't know about the UTI's but the retraction thing is false.

There is no way to pre determine who will have true phimosis, and alot of phimosis is caused by parents who retract their child instead of allowing the child to remain un-retracted until the child can retract himself sometime usually between 3 and 13.

Phismosis is easily fixed, that is real phimosis, without surgery. It has to do with stretching the foreskin, phimosis is the condition where the tip of the foreskin is to tight to retract.

Babies are SUPPOSED to have phimosis. The tip is supposed to be to tight to retract when they are born and it doesnt loosen up until after they are old enough to retract themselves. Retracting them early causes damage to the ridged band.

I am sorry you went through UTI's with your first, but personally i wouldn't advise what is normally a cosmetic surgery 'just in case' something goes wrong...... I would give him the chance to be whole first, and if it really is nessesary later then consider it when the issues happen.

Also ballooning is normal, it is usually a part of the separation process but your son may have had something different, he was a bit young for the separation to happen. Not unheard of, but rare that young.

anyways...... I wouldnt have my appendix out as a baby 'just in case' I would get appendiscitice later, I would treat the condition when it happens.

Hope all the best with your up and coming son though! congratulations on the baby

Sigh....I am AWARE of all this. [unneccesary comments removed by moderator] I was merely asking if it was likely to happen again.

Thanks but I wasn't going to get it done "just in case". I thought I was clear about that with my first post.

I think I will stick with my GP and peadiatric surgeon on my son's diagnosis thanks all the same.

I know you were probably just wanting to provide me with some advice but my question hasn't been answered and I was really hesistant in asking it in the first place because these topics always end up as a lecture on why/why not etc. and then get locked.

I went through a lot before I had my son circ'd and this went on for months. I am WELL aware of the medical issues that surround these things and trust my doctors on the decision they made at the time. I think I will just go and ask my doctor about it.

Thanks anyway.
