I haven't expressed as yet and my DH bought a second hand electric breast pump of ebay, I am a little hesitant to use it. Anyone else used a 2nd hand pump? How did you sterilise it?

It should be fine I had to use a second hand one in hospital so I am sure it's much of a muchness iykwim.
I would use the miltons just for ease and thats what the hospital uses then either boil or steam or miltons.

 I have used a second hand manual one from a friend. Just sterilise it in whatever steriliser you choose....I use the avent microwave one (also borrowed from said friend!) If you think about it the pumps in the hospital have all been used before!

It depends on the actual type and brand of breastpump. The ones used in hopsital are generally closed suction type ones and are specially designed for use by multiple individuals without transmission of organsims. Manual pumps where all parts can be sterilised should be ok. Small personal electric pumps ideally should not be used by more than one person. I have owned two medela pumps, one a swing and the othe the city style. Both state that they are for single individual use only. This is because of the direction of suction etc.
If you are using an electric pump, then open it up (ie unscrew) and clean with a dampened disinfectant cloth. Use only new tubing and parts (i sold my swing with all new parts). If its manual, a good boil or microwave steam should suffice.

I have a Medela electric pump and all parts of it are able to be sterilised. When I have loaned it to friends, I have just given all the parts including the tubing a boil and then let them air dry.

It will be fine. Just clean it thoroughly.

I was just coming in to type this. If it's an electric pump, if it has a closed motor, then it'll be fine. If it has an open motor then not so much.

If it's a manual pump and can be steralised, then again, it'll be fine. Just boil in a pot of water for 10 minutes.
