So how and when do/can you introduce foods to your child/toddler that may cause an allergic (anaphylactic) reaction>

In my family, there is severe reactions to peanuts, fish and seafood. Short of trying these foods out in the carpark of the local childrens hospital - how and when can I do this safely (or at least as safely as possible)?

we don't have a family history of allergies, but with peanuts I ate some peanut butter then kissed him on the cheeks, I had heard this was a method of testing. There was no reaction at all and he's still fine with peanuts.

Maybe you could go to the GP for an allergy test for your LO, I think it would be prudent, given your family history.

If you suspect your child may be allergic to anything (due to your family history). DO NOT test it yourself. Anaphylaxis can kill in minutes by airway obstruction. Safest way is to get GP to refer you to an allergy specialist. They'll pin the arms (or back) and drop different allergens on the skin and measure the size of swelling. The process will cause some pain by the needle. My son did it when he was six. Waiting time was 9 months. He is due to a re-test this year. We are considering private.

NEVER, NEVER test your child yourself if you suspect they may have any allergy.
