Hi there
I'm new to this forum.

My little girl is 5 weeks old and is on Nan HA formula. In the last few days she has been getting really angry on the bottle about half way through a feed. She grunts, goes red, clasps at the bottle, kicks her legs out violently and generally just looks really frustrated (not in pain that I can tell though). She's drinking the milk okay but is just angry about it. And she's really hard to settle after she's finished drinking. A nurse at the Maternal and Child Health Line said she might be overfed but if I try and stop after the first half of the feed she gets even angrier. Can anyone offer any suggestions or similar experiences? Personally, I think it may be reflux because if I don't hold her up for 1/2 an hour after a feed it comes back up. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Thank you. :)

That does sound alot like reflux but then im not an expert on it... both my boys had reflux but it was silent so they didnt seem to be in pain they just threw up.
You could maybe try feeding her a little more upright... im not sure if tis would help or not tho.

Good luck.... its no fun when they are like that and it cant be fun for the poor little things either.

IMO, there is no way you can possibly overfeed a baby, they stop sucking when they have had enough.

I'd try changing formulas, it sounds like that one doesn't agree with her stomach. Maybe try a thickened one and see how she goes.

 OMG my bubba is doing the exact same thing!!! shes a month old today and it just started in the last couple of days!!! its driving me nuts!!...I know what you mean about your bubba getting angry....mine seems so frustrated...shes definitely not in pain...its a completely different cry....does yours grab the bottle/your hands really hard (so it hurts) then pushes them away cracking a hissy fit??? its like shes hungry...but then when you give it to them there not and they get mad:confused:

I asked my doc to day..but she dosant really know...she said she may be overfed and just getting grissly...but I have an Ob appointment in a couple of weeks so i will check then...other then that she drinks the bottle normally...its just when she gets to the last 20mls or so. (she gets a few small deposits too..but not projectile ones)

HOw many mls is your dd on?? mines between 90 and 120:eek: shes on the same formula...nan ha gold...had absolutely no problems till this week!:banghead:

(lol i showed my hubby your post...and as he was reading it he said "did you post that?"...heheh cos its the exact same thing..there has to be a reason for it..if two of us have it there must be heaps more. i'll give the midwifes a call today..but i'm not to stressed..i know shes not in pain and she is drink heaps and keeping most of it down...i think shes just filling herself up to fast and getting a belly ache then not sure if she wants more cos after her screaming fit..she can fall asleep in a second its so funny)

I was so glad to hear that someone else was having a similar experience to me. Although not glad that your little one is suffering too. I rang my paediatrician today because I just couldn't work out what was wrong with her. He said it sounds like wind. I have noticed that she does get very windy on this formula. And the more I think about it, the more I agree with him. The last few feeds, she has actually been in pain and has cried for some time afterwards. Then she'll have a little release of wind and feel better. Poor petal. It's so strange though because it only happens during the day. At night she's a perfect angel. I told the Dr I had tried Infacol drops (you are not supposed to use them until your bub is one month old though) and that they hadn't worked. He suggested gripe water or donnalix. Failing that we would discuss perhaps using a formula thickener when I have my 6 week appointment with him next week.

Oh, and yep, she is drinking anywhere from 80 to 120ml per feed (7 feeds per day). This is a little much for her weight (she was only 2700g at birth) but it's only slightly over so I don't think I'm overfeeding her at all.

Best of luck with your little one - please keep me posted ;)

My bub did something like this every now and then and I usually found it was when he had wind or something. If I burped him more frequently through the feed it seemed to help enormously. If your bub is doing this every bottle it may be the formula or that she is gulping lots of air and getting wind. There are some bottles called Dr Browns which apparently avoid this, they used to only be available in the US or online but I have recently heard that they are sold in Australia now, though I don't know where. Good luck.

My bubs did the same thing and we pressumed wind, also we had to change the teats she was using as the avent ones were too big for her mouth which also would frustrate her. We have battled with her having bad reflux and wind right up to 2mnths of age and you would hear her in bed all night grunting with wind even though i wind her for half an hour after every feed.
I went to a chiropractor who is well known in the sydney area for working on bubs and he showed me a little technique of rubbing really really lightly just under her rib cage in the middle of her chest and he said that it gets stuck there and shuts off the flow to the stomach which causes bubs milk to just settle ontop and not go down and also making it impossible to get wind up. After being to him that day i rub it every time i stop half way thru a bottle and after the bottle and she no longer brings up lots of milk and also she slept for 9hours every night ever since that day. Before that she'd only sleep 4hrs at the most and always cry thru the night with wind.
Dont know if it'll help you but thought you may like to try it.
I also still wind her for at least 20min though.
We never have problems with her on the bottle now.:)

I too could have written that thread!
My DD is just over 7 weeks and she has always been a ferocious little eater on both boob and bottle and a bit of a crier before and after feeds too! She weighs 5kg at 7 weeks so yes a good eater! But from Saturday she started to feed less, our problem had always been stopping her not forcing her!

So... I'm thinking definately wind, it's like she is really hungry but knows it's going to hurt to swallow hence the screaming. I can hear her bring up wind deep in her throat. When I finally get her to sleep she wakes up in about 10 mins, I think from wind again.
I went and bought Bauers reflux remedy (natural) today and also S26 for reflux babies.

Should I see my doctor before giving her this formula? She has had half a bottle and it seemed to go down a lot easier. She doesn't throw up which is good. Also how long do they stay on this thickended formula for?

I just want to quickly say that my DS1 was on the NAN formula and he had really bad colic. And started reacting how you explained your DD is reacting. Personally we tried everything to no avail, then just changed his formula to S26 and he was amazingly cured. But every baby is different, not saying your daughter has it, just thought I would mention it :o

Thank you for all your replies. I've had a rough few days with my little one - she's been really unsettled and gassy and has been unable to sleep much as a result. I'm sure now it's colic/wind causing the problems. Infacol didn't work, Gripe Water made it worse and now I'm trying Infants Friend, which seems to be making a difference but I think it's too early to tell for sure. I decided not to try Donnalix as my paediatrician suggested as it's full of chemicals; not a natural product at all (glad I did some research first). If Infants Friend doesn't work I'm going to change her formula. I hope this is just a phase, poor thing, I hate seeing her uncomfortable and in pain. Best of luck to all those others experiencing something similar. :o
